If thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off (Matt. 18:8)

Did Jesus exaggerate when he asked us to cut off body parts which cause us to sin? 

Jesus wasn’t joking in the below listed verses in Matt. 18:1-9. One could say he was using a “hyperbole” (Greek hyperbole “exaggeration”) which means to exaggerate to create emphasis or effect as a rhetorical device or figure of speech, or one could also suggest he meant exactly what he said.

Matt 18:1 1At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? 2And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, 3And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. 4Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me. 6But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. 7Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh! 8Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire. 9And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire.

Mark 9:42–48 describes Jesus’ words in a similar way, and Gehenna is described “Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched”.

Jesus speaks to his own believing disciples. He doesn’t say that sinning results in reduced gifts in heaven but rather that we are risking to end up in hell which is rather serious. Maybe we prefer a Jesus who turns a blind eye to our sins, but this only works IF we repent from them (and thereafter live in righteousness). Only then are the past sins removed. It’s amazing that God has arranged so that we can be completely cleansed from our sins and get access to his Kingdom! Jesus went through a lot of suffering to make this possible. So, does Jesus suggest that we should cut off body parts if they make us sin? Yes, I believe he does, but think about it…When we stand there ready to chop off a hand with an ax, wouldn’t we rather CONFESS our sins, REPENT and avoid sinning?! Wouldn’t that be a much better alternative? This is an offer provided to us by Jesus. John says:

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Now, THAT is a much better alternative and it doesn’t contradict what Jesus says in Matt 18:8. Note that Jesus doesn’t say “If you have sinned you must as a punishment cut off that body part that made you sin”. We shouldn’t think that Jesus wants us to cut off body parts when we have sinned because that is not what he is saying. That wouldn’t make the sin be undone. He rather means that there are no acceptable excuses to sin IN THE FUTURE. Whether we are talking about kleptomania, mythomania, pyromania, gluttony, fraud, adultery, outlived homosexuality or alcoholism, there are no valid excuses to continue with those sins, and we can’t blame our sins on anyone or anything. We can never excuse our sins with “I’m born this way” or that we don’t have a choice because we just obeyed our bodies. Paul says:

1 Kor 9:27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

Who in their right mind would say “I know I could confess my sins and repent and I would be cleansed from all my sins BUT I prefer to chop my hands off to make absolutely sure I won’t sin with them again”? That would be rather foolish. It’s not certain that it will always be easy to avoid living in the flesh, but all things are possible for Jesus. Without the aid from the Holy Spirit it might be difficult to bring our bodies into subjection, but if we let ourselves be guided by Him we can make it. Prayers, fasting, persistence and support from other christians might very well be needed.

Matt 5:27 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: 28But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. 29And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. 30And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

Notice that it’s a sin “to lust” after a woman. It’s not a sin to accidentally meet a woman and find her amazingly attractive, and you might be forced to be around pretty girls on a daily basis at work or somewhere else. It’s a sin to look at a woman in reality or on pictures/films with the aim “to lust”, and it’s a sin to intentionally seek situations that can make you be tempted and which can lead to sin. Even if we avoid clear traps and tempting situations, Satan might still present them to us. We can’t escape from living in this world. A tempting thought doesn’t have to be a sin in itself. Jesus was tempted by the devil in the desert and I’m sure he desired to get something to eat and had such pictures in his head when the devil brought up the topic. It would have been a sin for Jesus to eat during a time when eating was not allowed, but despite the tempting thought he still chose to not give in for it and sin. God sees our hearts and he knows very well what we do or don’t do to avoid tempting situations, and also what we do to get out of difficult situations that we are already in and which we never even asked for.  God doesn’t ask for the impossible.

Om din hand eller din fot förleder dig till synd, så HUGG AV DEN och kasta den ifrån dig. Det är bättre för dig att gå in i livet stympad eller halt än att ha båda händerna och båda fötterna i behåll och kastas i den eviga elden

Överdrev Jesus när han bad oss att hugga av kroppsdelar om de förleder oss till synd?

Jesus skojade absolut inte, men visst skulle kunna säga att Jesus beskrivning i ovan vers är en “hyperbol”, (grek. hyperbole) som betyder att en medveten och demonstrativ överdrift används för att få fram en poäng. Hyperboler kan användas i både förstorande eller förminskande sammanhang. Man skulle också kunna säga att Jesus menade precis det han sade.

Matt 18:1 I samma ögonblick kom lärjungarna fram till Jesus och frågade: “Vem är störst i himmelriket?” 2 Då kallade han till sig ett barn och ställde det mitt ibland dem 3 och sade: “Amen säger jag er: Om ni inte omvänder er och blir som barn, kommer ni inte in i himmelriket. 4 Den som ödmjukar sig som detta barn, han är den störste i himmelriket. 5 Och den som tar emot ett sådant barn i mitt namn, han tar emot mig.6 Men den som förleder en av dessa små som tror på mig, för honom vore det bättre att en kvarnsten hängdes om hans hals och han sänktes i havets djup. 7 Ve över världen som förför. Förförelser måste komma, men ve den människa genom vilken förförelsen kommer. 8 Om din hand eller din fot förleder dig till synd, så hugg av den och kasta den ifrån dig. Det är bättre för dig att gå in i livet stympad eller halt än att ha båda händerna och båda fötterna i behåll och kastas i den eviga elden. 9 Och om ditt öga förleder dig till synd, så riv ut det och kasta det ifrån dig. Det är bättre för dig att gå in i livet med ett öga än att ha båda ögonen i behåll och kastas i det brinnande Gehenna. 10 Se till att ni inte föraktar någon enda av dessa små.

Markus 9:42–48 beskriver Jesus ord likartat, och Gehenna beskrivs “där deras mask inte dör och elden inte släcks”.

Jesus talar med sina egna troende lärljungar när han säger detta. Han säger inte att synd innebär reducerade gåvor i himlen, utan snarare att vi riskerar att hamna i HELVETET. Vi kanske föredrar en Jesus som ser mellan fingrarna på vår synd, men det fungerar bara OM vi omvänt oss och sedan lever i rättfärdighet. Endast då kan synden raderas. Det är fantastiskt att Gud gjorde det möjligt för oss att bli helt renade från vår synd och få tillgång till hans rike! Skulle alltså Jesus mena att vi måste hugga av oss kroppsdelar om de får oss att synda? Ja, jag tror det, men tänk efter…När vi står där med yxan lyft och beredda att hugga av oss en hand, kommer vi då inte på tanken att i stället för att stympa oss hellre ÅNGRA vår synd och OMVÄNDA oss och SLUTA synda? Det måste väl ändå vara ett bättre alternativ? Detta är ju också ett erbjudande vi har ifrån Jesus och ett alternativ som vi kan välja.  Det är ju bara om vi INTE vill sluta synda som Jesus föreslår alternativet med att hugga av oss kroppsdelar, och förmodligen så vet han mycket väl att ytterst få personer skulle välja det alternativet. Vem som helst skulle föredra alternativet omvändelse, men problemet är förstås att många kristna är övertygade om att de inte ens behöver välja något av dessa två alternativ för de tror att Jesus accepterar dem ändå. Johannes säger:

1 John 1:9 Om vi bekänner våra synder, är han trofast och rättfärdig, så att han förlåter oss våra synder och renar oss från all orättfärdighet.

Detta är ju helt klart ett bättre alternativ, och det motsäger inte Jesus ord i Matt. 18:8. Notera att Jesus INTE säger “Om ni syndat måste ni som ett straff hugga av er den kroppsdel som fått er att synda”. Vi ska alltså inte tro att Jesus vill att vi hugger av oss kroppsdelar när vi insett att vi syndat för det är INTE vad han säger. Det skulle ju inte få synden att bli ogjord! Han menar att det inte finns någon godtagbar ursäkt för att synda i FRAMTIDEN. Oavsett om det gäller kleptomani, mytomani, pyromani, frosseri, bedrageri, otrohet, utlevd homosexualitet eller alkoholism, så finns det ingen ursäkt för att fortsätta med dessa synder och vi kan inte skylla på någonting. Vi kan aldrig urskulda oss med att vi är “födda så” eller att vi inte har något val. Gud har gett oss en väg ut ur varje frestelse så att det inte behöver leda till synd, så då kan vi inte ursäkta oss med att “jag kan inte hjälpa det”. Om vi vägrar sluta synda på eget bevåg så säger Jesus att vi hellre bör hugga av oss en kroppsdel så att vi slutar synda,  så att vi inte hamnar i helvetet. Paulus säger:

1 Kor 9:27. Utan jag tuktar min kropp och kuvar den, FÖR ATT JAG INTE SKALL PREDIKA FÖR ANDRA OCH SJÄLV INTE HÅLLA PROVET.

Det är inte säkert att det alltid är lätt att bemästra köttet om vi har både arv och miljö emot oss, men allt är möjligt för Jesus. Utan den Helige Andes hjälp kan det vara svårt att tukta våra kroppar men om vi låter oss vägledas av Honom så går det. Det kan dock krävas mycket bön, fasta, envishet och support från andra kristna.

Matt 5:27 Ni har hört att det är sagt: Du skall inte begå äktenskapsbrott. 28 Jag säger er: Var och en som med begär ser på en kvinna har redan begått äktenskapsbrott med henne i sitt hjärta. 29 Om ditt högra öga förleder dig till synd, så riv ut det och kasta det ifrån dig! Det är bättre för dig att en av dina lemmar går förlorad än att hela din kropp kastas i Gehenna. 30 Och om din högra hand förleder dig till synd, så hugg av den och kasta den ifrån dig! Det är bättre för dig att en av dina lemmar går förlorad än att hela din kropp kommer till Gehenna. 31 Det är sagt: Den som skiljer sig från sin hustru skall ge henne skilsmässobrev. 32 Jag säger er: Var och en som skiljer sig från sin hustru av något annat skäl än otukt, han blir orsak till att äktenskapsbrott begås med henne, och den som gifter sig med en frånskild kvinna begår äktenskapsbrott.

Notera att det som är en synd är att MED BEGÄR se på en kvinna. Inte att råka stöta på en kvinna och anse att hon är rasande attraktiv. I KJV står det att det är en synd att se på en kvinna “to lust”. Det betyder att det är en synd att se på en kvinna i verkligheten eller på bilder/filmer med syftet att “lusta”. Det är synd att medvetet söka upp situationer som får oss att bli frestade och som kan leda oss till synd. En frestande tanke behöver inte vara “synd” i sig. Jesus var frestad av djävulen i öknen och tyckte säkert att det skulle smakat bra med något att äta, och fick säkert en sådan bild i sitt sinne när djävulen förde detta ämne på tal. Det hade varit en synd för Jesus att äta vid ett tillfälle där det inte var påbjudet att äta, men Jesus valde trots den frestande tanken att inte ge efter för den och synda. Gud ser våra hjärtan och vet mycket väl vad vi gör och inte gör för att inte hamna i frestande situationer, och vad vi försöker göra för att komma ur sådana situationer som vi redan hamnat i.

Jesus Christ died for the whole WORLD and God doesn’t want anyone to perish

“Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord God: and not that he should return from his ways, and live?” Ez. 18:23

In 1, 2 and 3 Book of John the word “world” is used liberally and it is not used only for believers but for the whole world and/or all people who live in the world.

1 John 4:9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. 

Jesus is the bread of the world and if ANY MAN (anyone) eats of it, he shall live for ever.

John 6:51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

John 8:45 They shall be ALL taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father cometh unto me. 

It is just like in a classroom where everyone is taught the same thing, but not everyone pays attention and learns. It is our responsibility to listen and learn. If Jesus did not enable all to get life through his death and his blood on the cross then the only alternative would be that God does not want all people to be saved. Some people would then be doomed from the start because Jesus did not die for them. The good news is that God is totally fair and the son of man died for everyone. In a way the atonement is still limited, because only those who repent for their sins and walk in the light with Jesus will get saved.

Below you can see some verses (but far from all that are available) where we can clearly see that Jesus died for all people in the whole world and also that God does not want anyone to perish. Either we can believe this clear description (which also results in a fair and loving God) or we can believe the opposite which makes our Lord and Creator a God of confusion, rather than fair and logical.

Rom. 11:32 For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all 

Acts 17:30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:31Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

2 Pet. 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

1 Tim. 2:3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

1 Tim 4:10 For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.

John 1:9 That was the true light which lighteth every man that cometh into the world

Luke 19:10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost

Rom. 5:6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.7For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. 8But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

John 12:46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.47And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. 48He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

John 3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

1 John 2:2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.

John 12:32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.

Rom 1:19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 20For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

John 6:33 For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world. —35And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.—   40And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day— 51I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

John 10:49 And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,50 Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.51 And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation

Is. 53:6 All of us like sheep have wandered, Each to his own way we have turned, And Jehovah hath caused to meet on him, The punishment of us all. (Young’s literal – compare also with NASB)

2 Cor. 5:14 For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead:15 And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.

Heb. 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

Ez. 18:32 For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord God: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.

He died for ALL (1 Tim. 2:6).
He died for ALL MEN (Rom. 5:18; 1 Tim. 4:10).
He died for US ALL, for ALL OF US (Isa. 53:6).
He died for the UNGODLY (Rom. 5:6).
He died for CHRIST-DENIERS (2 Peter 2:1).
He died for SINNERS (Rom. 5:8).
He died for EVERY MAN (Heb. 2:9).
He died for MANY (Matthew 20:28).
He died for the WORLD (John 6:33,51; John 1:29 and John 3:16).
He died for the WHOLE WORLD (1 John 2:2).
He died for the WHOLE NATION of Israel (John 11:50-51).
He died for the CHURCH (Eph. 5:25).
He died for His SHEEP (John 10:11).
He died for ME (Gal. 2:20)

Räcker det med att TRO och bekänna Jesus med vår mun för att bli frälst?

Gud gjorde det inte svårt för oss att bli frälsta.

Joh 6:35 Jesus svarade: “Jag är livets bröd. Den som kommer till mig skall aldrig hungra, och den som tror på mig skall aldrig någonsin törsta”.

Joh 6:40 Ty detta är min Faders vilja, att var och en som ser Sonen och tror på honom skall ha evigt liv, och jag skall låta honom uppstå på den yttersta dagen.

Joh 11:25 Jesus sade: “Jag är uppståndelsen och livet. Den som tror på mig skall leva om han än dör

Vi behöver inte gå igenom några krångliga ritualer eller någon skärseld för att bli renade från vår synd, utan vi kan helt enkelt bekänna vår synd inför Gud och omvända oss för att få syndernas förlåtelse. Detta gäller även om vi gjort oss skyldiga till hemska överträdelser, många överträdelser eller upprepade överträdelser. Men omvändelse betyder inte ett temporärt ursäktande för en daglig synd, utan det betyder att i hjärtat inse sin synd samt hissa vit flagg och vilja lämna synderna bakom sig en gång för alla. Detta måste göras både i tanke och handling. Visst, det kan hända att vi återigen väljer att falla för Satans frestelser, men om vi lever i omvändelse, synd, omvändelse, synd, etc, så visar det att vi inte har i sanning omvänt oss.

1 John 1:9 OM vi bekänner våra synder, är han trofast och rättfärdig, så att han förlåter oss våra synder och renar oss från all orättfärdighet.

Bibeln lär oss att vi blir frälsta av tro:

Joh 3:16 Ty så älskade Gud världen att han utgav sin enfödde Son, för att den som tror på honom inte skall gå förlorad utan ha evigt liv. 

Men det måste vara en sann tro. Det räcker inte med att endast TRO, utan vi måste även bekänna tron med vår mun:

Rom. 9 Om du därför med din mun bekänner att Jesus är Herren och i ditt hjärta tror att Gud har uppväckt honom från de döda, skall du bli frälst. 10 Ty med hjärtat tror man och blir rättfärdig, med munnen bekänner man och blir frälst.

Apg 16:29 Då bad fångvaktaren om ljus och rusade in och föll skräckslagen ner inför Paulus och Silas. 30 Sedan förde han ut dem och frågade: “Ni herrar, vad skall jag göra för att bli frälst?” 31 De svarade: “Tro på Herren Jesus så blir du frälst, du och din familj.”

Apg 2:21 Och det skall ske att var och en som åkallar Herrens namn skall bli frälst. (denna vers handlar om den sista tiden)

Men inte ens ett öppet erkännande av vår tro frälser oss om inte resten stämmer:

Titus 1:16 De försäkrar att de känner Gud, men med sina gärningar förnekar de honom. De är avskyvärda och olydiga, odugliga till varje god gärning

Matt 15:8-9 Detta folk ärar mig med sina läppar, men deras hjärtan är långt ifrån mig. Fåfängt dyrkar de mig, ty lärorna de lär ut är människors bud.

Matt. 7:22 Många skall säga till mig på den dagen: Herre, Herre, har vi inte profeterat med hjälp av ditt namn och med hjälp av ditt namn drivit ut onda andar och med hjälp av ditt namn gjort många kraftgärningar? 23 Men då skall jag säga dem sanningen: Jag har aldrig känt er. Gå bort ifrån mig, ni laglösa!

Här nedan säger Markus att den som tror OCH BLIR DÖPT ska bli frälst:

Mark 16:16 Den som tror och blir döpt skall bli frälst, men den som inte tror skall bli fördömd.

För vi kan ju inte påstå att en person som tror och blir döpt INTE är frälst. Man skulle också kunna säga att den som tror, blir döpt, ångrar sina synder, lever i ljuset med Jesus, visar god frukt, är en lärljunge och evangaliserar ska bli frälst, och vi skulle kunna lägga till ytterligare några beskrivningar på en kristen person. Det är tänkt att vi SKA låta döpa oss så fort vi omvänt oss och bestämt oss för att vandra med Jesus, men om vi skulle avlida innan eller inte har tillgång till så mycket vatten, så betyder det inte att vi inte är frälsta. Det motsäger inte Mark. 16:16. Räcker det med att tro några minuter, och sedan förbli frälst resten av livet?

Matt 10:22 Och ni skall bli hatade av alla för mitt namns skull. Men den som håller ut intill slutet skall bli frälst.

Upp. 3:11 Jag kommer snart. Håll fast det du har, så att ingen tar din krona.

1 John. 2:24 Låt det ni har hört från början förbli i er. Om det som ni har hört från början förblir i er, kommer ni också att förbli i Sonen och i Fadern. 25 Och detta är vad han själv lovade oss, det eviga livet.

Ovan verser säger att vi måste hålla ut till slutet för att vara säkra på att få det eviga livet. Det räcker inte att tro att det endast finns EN Gud och att Jesus i sanning är Guds son.

Jak. 2:19 Du tror att Gud är en. Det gör du rätt i. Också de onda andarna tror det, och bävar.

Lukas 4: 41 Onda andar for även ut ur många, och de ropade: “Du är Guds Son.” Men han talade strängt till dem och förbjöd dem att tala, eftersom de visste att han var Messias.

Apg 19: 15 Men den onde anden svarade dem: “Jesus känner jag till, och vem Paulus är vet jag, men vilka är ni?”

Det räcker inte med att ha en tro utan gärningar för då skulle även demoner vara frälsta. Jakobs poäng i Jak. 2 är att visa att en ensam tro inte räcker för frälsning och att tro utan gärningar är död. Det är alldeles sant att vi inte kan bli frälsta av gärningar allena, men inte heller av tro allena. Vi kan inte förtjäna frälsning av något som vi tror eller gör, men Gud har i sin barmhärtighet gjort frälsningen möjlig för oss genom nåd. Att Jesus gjort det möjligt för oss att bli renade från våra synder betyder inte att Gud efter reningen ser mellan fingrarna på vår synd, eller att även ljumma kristna är välkomna till hans rike.

Vi vet alltså att om vi TROR i hjärtat på Jesus så blir vi frälsta, men vad innebär det att tro på Jesus? Att tro på Jesus betyder att vi ÄLSKAR vi honom, och vad betyder det?

The Bible only perfect in English?

I certainly couldnt be a “KJV-onlyist” because I prefer to read the Bible in my own tongue which is Swedish.

If the KJV was “perfect” then you would never have to go back to the Greek/Hebrew/Aramaic at any time for references and to get a more clear view, because the KJV is supposed to stand on its own legs and fully able to solve all queries. Nevertheless also KJV-onlyists sometimes go back to the Greek when they want to see the more “original” meaning of a passage, and this is evidence in itself that KJV is inferior to the original languages and and not “perfect”. Sometimes it’s hard also for native English speakers to understand some of the words in the King James Bible. They may have to look up the meaning of words and some words have changed meanings over the years. If the KJV was “perfect”, the language used should always be up to date, but this is an impossible demand for any Bible translation.

Some suggest that people who don’t have English as their native tongue could still use their own Bible version of “Textus Receptus”, and be a “onlyist” when it comes to this particular version, but not all languages have this type of translation. Since the year 2003, there is a Swedish translation (“Reformationsbibeln”) rather close to the “KJV” because Textus Receptus is used as a source (or the main source), but only the New Testament is translated. Besides, I’ve seen examples of errors in this translation, like adding question marks where there are none in the original Greek. Neither can we conclude that “the very first Bible translation” from the original language to another language is the superior one for that language. This simply isn’t always the case.

Why would God select the King James Bible of all versions to be supernaturally preserved? Because he likes English speakers the best? If KJV was superior over all other versions, then all those who are not English native speakers would have to sit down by the feet of those who are, to learn the “real” truth. As soon as there is a difference of opinions concerning a Bible passage, then the person who is a native English speaker could claim to be more accurate since he is basing his understanding on the KJV.

There are many examples of where a particular expression can be better captured in Spanish, Swedish, or some other language, rather than in English. (In other cases it might be the other way around.) It makes better sense if it’s the original Greek, Hebrew and Arameic which should correct us and not a secondary translation. As soon as you translate a sentence from one language to another, there is always a risk that the perfect nuance of the original language gets lost.

Anyway, here are some examples where KJV has an inferior translation than other versions in English. (Note, that I still feel the KJV is the best translation overall in English.)

In the NASB “our great God and Savior” refers to one person, Jesus Christ Himself. This makes the deity of Christ clear, by calling Him “our great God.” The KJV opens up for the possibility that “the great God” and “our Saviour Jesus Christ” may refer to two distinct persons.

Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of Christ, who is God over all, forever praised!

Whereas the NIV proclaims that Christ “is God over all,” the KJV avoids this claim to Christ’s deity, stating only that Christ is “over all.”

The deity of Christ is better shown in the NASB, because only Jesus had a completely unique relationship with God, where God is His “own” Father. God was no one else’s Father in this unique way. If we all had God as our Father in this unique way, then we would also be making ourselves equal to God.

But Jesus remained silent.  The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.”  64 “Yes, it is as you say,” Jesus replied.

The NIV makes it clear that Jesus’ response to the high priest, literally “you say,” is a Greek idiom meaning “yes, it is as you say,” (i.e. “what you have said is true”).  Therefore, Jesus’ response is an indication of that He claimed to be the Christ, the Son of God. The KJV, fails to translate this idiom into its full meaning for modern readers, and consequently leaves doubt as to whether Jesus actually claimed to be the Son of God.

The KJV omits the word “God” (Greek theos), supplying instead only the word “Lord,” which by itself does not necessarily denote deity.

The NASB makes it clear that the nature of Jesus is precisely identical to the nature of God Himself (“the exact representation of His nature”). The KJV diminishes this expression to merely the “image” of God.  Given that all human beings are said elsewhere to be made in the image of God (Genesis 2), it becomes difficult to establish from the KJV rendering of this passage anything more than the humanity of Jesus.

Another evidence that the KJV is not “perfect” is the below verse.

Hebr. 6:4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, 5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, 6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. 

The word IF is not in the Greek in verse 6!

Yet, this word is what many theologians base their understanding of when it comes to this verse. Consider what Adam Clarke wrote about this and the aorist tense:

“And having fallen away” I can express my own mind on this translation nearly in the words of Dr. Macknight: ‘The participles who were enlightened, have tasted, and were made partakers, being aorists, are properly rendered by our translators in the past time; wherefore parapesontas, being an aorist, ought likewise to have been translated in the past time, “HAVE fallen away”. Never­theless, our translators, following Beza, who with­out any authority from ancient MSS. has inserted in his version the word “if” have rendered this clause, IF they fall away, that this text might not appear to contradict the doctrine of the perse­verance of the saints. But as no translator should take upon him to add to or alter the Scriptures, for the sake of any favourite doctrine, I have trans­lated parapesontas in the past time, “have fallen away” according to the true import of the word, as standing in connection with the other aorists in the preceding verses.

(Theodore Beza is John Calvin’s successor.) Young’s literal translation reads:

“And having fallen away, again to renew them to reformation, having crucified again to themselves the Son of God, and exposed to public shame” (v. 6).

Tänka det bästa om människor och inte det sämsta

Det kanske inte alltid känns lätt att förlåta, men det blir lättare om man tänker på att Jesus förlåtit oss våra synder, och att vi vinner på att försöka fungera liknande en försvarsadvokat den korta tid som vi lever på jorden. Det innebär att vi borde ha en försvarsadvokatinställning, där vi försöker hitta förmildrande omständigheter hos människor som vi anser agerat på ett felaktigt sätt. Precis som vad gäller vanliga försvarsadvokater så går det inte att förneka något som är uppenbart och bevisat, men i övrigt så går det alltså att, om möjligt, söka förmildrande omständigheter som kan stämma överens med verkligheten eller ej (eftersom vi inte vet kan vi anta det mest fördelaktigaste alternativet.)

Vi borde alltid vara villiga att förlåta vår nästa såsom Herren är villig att förlåta oss. Gud förlåter oss inte utan villkor.

Kol. 3:13 Ha fördrag med varandra och förlåt varandra, om någon har något att förebrå en annan. SÅSOM Herren har förlåtit er skall ni förlåta varandra.

Om någon står och misshandlar oss så går det inte att låtsas att personen ångrat att han misshandlat oss eftersom personen är mitt uppe i sin synd (misshandel) och helt uppenbart inte ångrat det. Vår inställning bör dock vara tankegången att om personen vid något senare tillfälle verkligen ångrat sin synd så bör vi kunna förlåta. Gud har som sagt förlåtit oss våra synder då vi bekände dem och omvände oss ifrån dem.

Vi vinner på att inte försöka tänka det sämsta om våra medmänniskor, utan snarare att hela tiden försöka sträcka oss efter förmildrande omständigheter så att vi kan tänka det bästa om människor – utan att förneka uppenbara övertramp. Vi kan förstås stöta på människor som visat prov på elakhet, hyckleri, snålhet, skadeglädje, själviskhet, hånfullhet, etc, som vi visserligen inte kan förneka, men däremot kan vi försöka tänka att personen kanske haft en dålig dag, kanske missförstått något, kanske är uppväxt i en dålig miljö, etc. Förmildrande omständigheter innebär inte att synder rättfärdigas men det är trots allt Gud som ger den slutgiltiga domen om andra människor och inte vi. (Vi själva kan förstås göra vad vi kan för att belysa synder hos andra, och gärna på ett smidigt sätt.)

Vidare kan vi försöka tänka på att vi själva inte alltid levt upp till den idealiska människan, och vi är tacksamma att människor i sin tur är villiga att förlåta oss. Vi kanske fortfarande tänker på människor som syndat grovt emot oss för flera år sedan, och det underlättar om vi tänker oss att dessa människor kommit till insikt om sitt tidigare agerande och nu omvänt sig. Det är inte alls säkert att det stämmer i verkligheten, men hellre fria än fälla. Om människor som syndat emot oss ber om en äkta förlåtelse, skulle vi förlåta dem? Svaret borde vara JA.

Glömma minnen är inte ett krav

Jag tror att många kristna missförstår förlåtelsekravet och tror att de måste förlåta andra för deras synder trots att de är mitt uppe i dem och inte visar på minsta vis att de ångrar dem. De kanske hånskrattande säger “Jaha, ska du inte förlåta mig nu när jag står här och klipper sönder dina kläder och rispar med kniven i ditt glasbord, för du är ju kristen?!”.

Att förlåta någon betyder inte att vi också måste glömma alla de synder och sorger som den andra personen orsakat. Det kan hända att en person syndat mot dig i flera år, och dessa år kanske man inte kan radera ur sitt minne hur som helst. Det är dock viktigt att vi alltid är villiga och beredda att förlåta människor om de ber om förlåtelse, och att tänka på att andra kanske inte ens inser att deras agerande visar på kärlekslöshet. Även om du är en bekännande kristen så kan din frälsning hänga på att du vägrar att förlåta en medmänniska. Att förlåta någon betyder inte att vi måste upphöra med att vara på vår vakt vad gäller den människan, i det fall hon visat att hon syndat mot dig vid upprepade tillfällen.

Matt 6:14 Ty om ni förlåter människorna deras överträdelser, skall er himmelske Fader också förlåta er. 15 Men om ni inte förlåter människorna, skall inte heller er Fader förlåta era överträdelser.

Markus 11:25 Och när ni står och ber, så förlåt om ni har något emot någon. Då skall också er himmelske Fader förlåta er era överträdelser.

Lukas 6:37 Döm inte, och ni skall inte bli dömda. Fördöm inte, och ni skall inte bli fördömda. Förlåt, och ni skall bli förlåtna.

Johannes 20:23 Om ni förlåter någon hans synder så är de förlåtna, och om ni binder någon i hans synder så är han bunden.

Om en person slår dig, och du säger “jag förlåter dig“, och den andra säger “bra, för här kommer en smocka till, och efter den ännu fler, och jag vet att det jag gör är fel men jag gör det i alla fall”, så är det tydligt att personen inte har ångrat sin synd mot dig. Ska du då förlåta honom? En sådan person är helt medveten om att han syndar. Jesus och Stefanus förlät visserligen människor som handlat illa mot dem och som INTE bett om förlåtelse, men vi kan också läsa att dessa inte var medvetna om att de felat. Även vid sådana tillfällen måste vi alltså förlåta.

Lukas 23:34 Men Jesus sade: “Fader, förlåt dem, ty de vet inte vad de gör.” Och de delade hans kläder mellan sig och kastade lott om dem.

Apg 7:59 Så stenade de Stefanus, under det att han bad: “Herre Jesus, tag emot min ande.” 60 Sedan föll han på knä och bad med hög röst: “Herre, ställ dem inte till svars för denna synd.” Med de orden insomnade han.

Även Paulus menar att Jesus visat honom barmhärtighet eftersom han (Paulus) inte visste bättre när han tidigare agerade som våldsverkare. Paulus trodde att han gjorde helt rätt när han förföljde kristna eftersom han var ivrig att leva som en renlärig jude efter de judiska lagarna och baserat på hur han tolkade dem. Paulus hade därför inte skäl att känna någon ånger eftersom han inte insåg att han felat. Jesus fick honom på andra tankar.

1 Tim. 1:12 Jag tackar honom som har gett mig kraft, Kristus Jesus vår Herre, för att han ansåg mig värd förtroende och tog mig i sin tjänst, 13 fastän jag förut var en hädare, förföljare och våldsman. Men han förbarmade sig över mig, därför att jag i min otro inte visste vad jag gjorde. 

“Förlåt mig”, betyder att folk måste bli förlåtna?

Om någon medvetet slår dig och är fullt medveten om att han/hon syndar och handlar emot Guds bud, så kan jag inte se att det är självklart att vi ska förlåta, men grundinställningen måste vara förlåtelse. Lukas säger att OM en person ångrat sig (en person som alltså är medveten om sin synd), och säger “jag ångrar mig“, så ska vi förlåta.:

Lukas 17:3 Var på er vakt! Om din broder syndar, så tillrättavisa honom, och OM han ångrar sig, så förlåt honom.

Efesierbrevet 4:32 Var i stället goda och barmhärtiga mot varandra och förlåt varandra, liksom Gud i Kristus har förlåtit er.

Apostlagärningarna 8:22 Vänd dig därför bort från din ondska och be till Herren. Kanske skall han förlåta dig vad du tänker i ditt hjärta.

Apostlagärningarna 26:15 Jag sade: Vem är du, Herre? Och Herren svarade: Jag är Jesus, den som du förföljer. — 17 när jag räddar dig undan ditt eget folk och undan hedningarna. Till dem sänder jag dig, 18 för att du skall öppna deras ögon, så att de vänder sig från mörker till ljus, från Satans makt till Gud. Så skall ni genom tron på mig få syndernas förlåtelse och arvslott bland dem som är helgade.

Markus 4:12 för att de skall se med sina ögon och ändå inte se och höra med sina öron och ändå inte förstå och omvända sig och få förlåtelse.

Jeremia 36:3 Kanske skall Juda hus vända om var och en från sin onda väg, när de hör om all den olycka som jag tänker låta komma över dem. Då skall jag förlåta dem deras missgärning och deras synd.”

Jesus själv lärde oss vikten att förlåta:

Lukas 11:4 och förlåt oss våra synder, ty också vi förlåter var och en som står i skuld till oss. Och för oss inte in i frestelse

Lukas 7:47 Därför säger jag dig: Hon har fått förlåtelse för sina många synder. Det är därför hon visar så stor kärlek. Men den som har fått litet förlåtet älskar litet.

Paulus kritiserade korintierna för att ha varit alldeles för släpphänta och accepterande vad gäller synd i 1 Kor. 5, men när syndaren blivit tillrättavisad och visat ånger så måste vi visa att vi förlåter honom och tröstar honom så att han inte går under av all bedrövelse:

2 Kor. 2:6 Det räcker med den bestraffning han har fått av de flesta. 7 Nu bör ni i stället förlåta och trösta honom, så att han inte alldeles går under i sin djupa sorg. 8 Därför uppmanar jag er att bemöta honom med kärlek. 9 När jag skrev till er, var det också för att få veta om ni skulle bestå provet och vara lydiga i allt. 10 Den som ni förlåter, honom förlåter också jag. Ty det jag har förlåtit, om jag haft något att förlåta, det har jag gjort för er skull, inför Kristi ansikte, 11 för att vi inte skall bli överlistade av Satan. Hans avsikter känner vi till.

Förlåta sju gånger sjuttio gånger

Här nedan är den berömda liknelsen i Matteus 18 som handlar om förlåtelse. Det intressanta är att den tjänare som fick sin skuld raderad (notera att han först bad kungen om förbarmande innan han fick skulden raderad och att det inte var kungen som initierade förslaget att radera skulden) fick tillbaka samma raderade (förlåtna) skuld lite senare! Detta visar att en förlåten och renad person ändå riskerar att gå evigt förlorad om han själv vägrar att förlåta andra. Det är viktigt att inte bara ta för givet att vi alltid är förlåtna för att “Gud är så kärleksfull och förlåtande” och för att vi är “kristna”, utan att vi faktiskt BER OM FÖRLÅTELSE och att vi inser att vi syndat. Likaså att vi planerar att inte upprepa synden, för annars är det ingen sann ånger. Tjänaren i liknelsen hade inte gjort en sann omvändelse (trots att han bad om förbarmande/förlåtelse) och därför var hans själ fortfarande i fara. Gud kan se i våra hjärtan om vi verkligen ångrar vår synd och om vi behandlar andra med en förlåtande attityd.

Matt 18:21 Då gick Petrus fram och frågade Jesus: “Herre, hur många gånger skall min broder försynda sig mot mig och få min förlåtelse? Upp till sju gånger?” 22 Jesus sade till honom: “Jag säger dig: Inte sju gånger utan sjuttio gånger sju. 23 Därför är himmelriket likt en kung som ville ha redovisning av sina tjänare. 24 När han började granskningen, förde man fram till honom en som var skyldig tio tusen talenter.[d]25 Eftersom han inte kunde betala, befallde hans herre att han och hans hustru och barn och allt vad han ägde skulle säljas och skulden betalas. 26 Tjänaren föll ner för honom och bad: Ha tålamod med mig, så skall jag betala dig alltsammans. 27 Då förbarmade sig tjänarens herre över honom och gav honom fri och efterskänkte hans skuld.28 Men när tjänaren kom ut, träffade han en av sina medtjänare, som var skyldig honom hundra denarer. Han tog fast honom och ville strypa honom och sade: Betala, vad du är skyldig! 29 Hans medtjänare föll då ner och bad honom: Ha tålamod med mig, så skall jag betala dig. 30 Men han gick inte med på det utan gick och lät sätta honom i fängelse, tills han hade betalat vad han var skyldig. 31 När hans medtjänare såg vad som hände, blev de mycket upprörda och gick och talade om alltsammans för sin herre. 32 Då kallade hans herre honom till sig och sade: Du onde tjänare! Hela skulden efterskänkte jag dig, därför att du bad mig. 33 Borde inte du också ha förbarmat dig över din medtjänare, liksom jag förbarmade mig över dig? 34 Och i sin vrede överlämnade hans herre honom till fångvaktarna, tills han hade betalt allt vad han var skyldig. 35 Så skall också min himmelske Fader göra med er, om ni inte var och en av hjärtat förlåter sin broder.”.

Det kan vara svårt om din väg korsas av en person som låter sin synd drabba dig och dina nära och kära, och du syndar inte om du blir besviken, ledsen, arg och ibland påminns om det svåra. Låt Gud ta hand om domen vad gäller andra människors överträdelser. Gud vet precis vad som finns i människors hjärtan.

Både Fadern och Sonen kallar sig A och O och JAG ÄR

Gud Fader kallar sig den förste och den siste, a och o, vilket är början och slutet, och Jesus kallar sig också dessa namn. Att göra sig likvärdig Gud och att kalla sig vid hans namn är den yttersta formen av HÄDELSE, så en trogen jude eller kristen skulle aldrig komma att tänka på att göra sig skyldig till något sådant. Jesus Kristus hade inga som helst problem med att kalla sig vid Faderns namn, eller att människor tillbad honom – trots att Jesus själv säger att endast GUD ska tillbes. Detta kan bara betyda att Jesus ÄR Gud, för annars skulle han vara den värsta sortens lögnare och hädare. Fariséerna på Jesus tid insåg förstås att Jesus vid upprepade tillfällen gjorde sig likvärdig Gud genom att förlåta synder, stå över sabbaten, påstå sig själv vara Messias, etc, och det var av den anledningen som de ville döda honom. Fadern och sonen är båda A och O:

Isa 44:6 Så säger HERREN, Israels konung, och hans förlossare, HERREN Sebaot: Jag är den förste, och jag är den siste, och förutom mig finnes ingen Gud.

Isa 48:12.Hör på mig, du Jakob, du Israel, som jag har kallat. Jag är det; jag är den förste, jag är ock den siste.

Upp 1:5 och från Jesus Kristus, det trovärdiga vittnet, den förstfödde från de döda och härskaren över jordens kungar. Han som älskar oss och har friköpt oss från våra synder med sitt blod 6 och som har gjort oss till ett konungadöme, till präster åt sin Gud och Fader, honom tillhör äran och makten i evigheternas evigheter, amen.7 Se, han kommer med molnen, och varje öga skall se honom, även de som har genomborrat honom, och alla jordens stammar skall jämra sig över honom. Ja, amen. 8 Jag är A och O, säger Herren Gud, han som är och som var och som kommer, den Allsmäktige.-–12 Jag vände mig om för att se rösten som talade med mig. Och när jag vände mig om, såg jag sju ljusstakar av guld 13 och mitt ibland ljusstakarna en som liknade Människosonen, klädd i en fotsid klädnad och omgjordad med ett bälte av guld om bröstet. —16 I sin högra hand höll han sju stjärnor, och ur hans mun gick ett tveeggat, skarpt svärd, och hans ansikte lyste som solen, när den skiner i all sin kraft.17 När jag såg honom föll jag ner som död för hans fötter, och han lade sin högra hand på mig och sade: “Var inte förskräckt. Upp 21:5Och han som satt på tronen sade: »Se, jag gör allting nytt.» Ytterligare sade han: »Skriv: ty dessa ord äro visa och sanna.»  6Han sade vidare till mig: »Det är gjort. Jag är A och O, BEGYNNELSEN och änden. Åt den som törstar skall jag giva att dricka för intet ur källan med livets vatten.

Upp 22:12Se, jag kommer snart och har med mig min lön, för att vedergälla var och en efter som hans gärningar äro.13Jag är A och O, den förste och den siste, begynnelsen och änden. 14Saliga äro de som två sina kläder för att få rätt att äta av livets träd och att gå in i staden genom dess portar.15Men de som äro hundar och trollkarlar och otuktiga och dråpare och avgudadyrkare och alla som älska och göra lögn, de måste alla stanna därutanför.» 16Jag, Jesus, har sänt min ängel för att i församlingarna vittna om detta för eder. Jag är telningen från Davids rot och kommen av hans släkt, jag är den klara morgonstjärnan.

Fadern säger att han är JAG ÄR, vilket Jesus också säger om sig själv

Jag är = Jahvé (JHVH). Jahvéh är Gamla testamentets Kristus som åtföljde Israels barn i moln- och eldstoden.”De drack ur en andlig klippa som följde dem och den klippan var Kristus”. (2 Mos. 3:1-14, 1 Kor 10:4) Ingen annan än Gud skaparen har kallat sig Jahvé i Bibeln.

2 Mosebok 3:14 Gud sade till Mose: »Jag är den jag är.» Och han sade vidare: »Så skall du säga till Israels barn: ‘Jag är’ har sänt mig till eder. 15Och Gud sade ytterligare till Mose: »Så skall du säga till Israels barn: HERREN, edra fäders Gud, Abrahams Gud, Isaks Gud och Jakobs Gud, har sänt mig till eder. Detta skall vara mitt namn evinnerligen, och så skall man nämna mig från släkte till släkte.

Jesus kommer med en rad påståenden i Johannes 8 (och på många andra ställen i Bibeln) som vore skrytsamma hädelser såvida Jesus inte är Gud:

Joh 8:12 Åter talade Jesus till dem och sade: »Jag är världens ljus; den som följer mig, han skall förvisso icke vandra i mörkret, utan skall hava livets ljus.»

Joh 8:19 Då sade de till honom: »Var är då din Fader?» Jesus svarade: »I kännen varken mig eller min Fader. Om I känden mig, så känden I ock min Fader.»

Joh. 8:23 Men han svarade dem: »I ären härnedifrån, jag är ovanifrån; I ären av denna världen, jag är icke av denna världen.

Joh 8:51Sannerligen, sannerligen säger jag eder: Den som håller mitt ord, han skall aldrig någonsin se döden.»

Jesus hävdar alltså att HAN är världens ljus, och att det är HANS ord som ska följas och som leder till liv. Det vanliga för en troende jude är att säga att det är GUDS ord (Faderns ord) som ska följas. Jesus anser sig alltså vara Gud, och det är något som åhörarna inte missuppfattar. Jesus säger modigt att vi skulle känna Fadern om vi känner Jesus och att han (till skillnad mot andra) inte är av denna världen men kommer ovanifrån.

Joh. 8:24Därför sade jag till eder att I skullen dö i edra synder; ty om I icke tron att jag är den jag är, så skolen I dö i edra synder.» 25Då frågade de honom: »Vem är du då?» Jesus svarade dem: »Det som jag redan från begynnelsen har uttalat för eder.

Jesus säger att om vi inte tror om honom att “jag är den jag är” så kommer vi att dö i våra synder. Det är alltså enormt viktigt att vi rätt kan identifiera Jesus och respektera att han är den han säger sig vara. Våra själar kan hänga på detta! Och vem är då Jesus och vad är det vi måste tro om honom? Jesus säger att han är den som han alltid sagt sig vara från början. Isaiah var först ut bland profeterna att ge sonen namn:

Jes 9:6Ty ett barn varder oss fött, en son bliver oss given, och på hans skuldror skall herradömet vila; och hans namn skall vara: Underbar i råd, Väldig GUD, Evig fader, Fridsfurste.

Jes 10:20 På den dagen skall kvarlevan av Israel och de räddade av Jakobs hus inte längre stödja sig vid honom som slog dem. I trohet skall de stödja sig på Herren, Israels Helige. 21 En kvarleva skall vända om, en kvarleva av Jakob, till Gud, den Mäktige. (Samma namn som i 9:6)

Jes 14:7 Därför skall Herren själv ge er ett tecken: Se, jungfrun skall bli havande och föda en son och hon skall ge honom namnet Immanuel.

Vidare vet vi att Jesus är världens ljus, kommer ovanifrån, är början och slutet och att allting är skapat till, av och genom honom. Han är rätt och slätt GUD, vilket namnet Immanuel (“Gud med oss”) också visar. Eftersom det är viktigt för oss att acceptera Jesus för den han är så är det lätt att förstå varför Satan försöker sprida den helt motsatta läran – genom att göra olika religiösa grupperingar populära som lär just att Jesus endast är en vanlig människa och/eller en ängel. Satans mål är ju att människor ska gå förlorade så att förvilla människor och få dem att tro att Jesus inte är Gud är det bästa sättet (förutom att få människor att synda) att få människor att vara på väg till helvetet. Det som de flesta sekter har gemensamt är att de vägrar att acceptera att Jesus är GUD. Satan har stor makt inom Jehovas Vittnen som vägrar att låta sig korrigeras av Bibeln om Jesus gudomlighet, och de föredrar att sprida ut människoläror genom traditioner och tidskrifter.

Jesus påstår att han är sänd av Fadern, och att en del av åhörarna kommer till tro på honom. Vad är det då som de börjar tro, som de inte tidigare trodde? De visste sedan tidigare att Josef och Maria var hans föräldrar, att han kom från Nasaret och att han predikade för människor och kanske även att han utförde mirakel. Men plötsligt så “kommer de till tro” på honom, och det kan bara betyda att de nu tror att han är den som han säger sig vara:

Joh. 8:29Och han som har sänt mig är med mig; han har icke lämnat mig allena, eftersom jag alltid gör vad honom behagar.» 30När han talade detta, kommo många till tro på honom.31Då sade Jesus till de judar som hade satt tro till honom: »Om I förbliven i mitt ord, så ären I i sanning mina lärjungar

Jesus säger att om vi syndar är vi syndens träl och INTE fria, och han säger också att det är SONEN som kan göra oss fria. Alltså JESUS själv som är Guds son. Eftersom det är sonen som ska dö för världens synder så är det genom hans blod som vi kan bli fria. Då blir vi i sanning renade, men Jesus sanning gäller även efter vår rening – nämligen att vi inte är fria om vi syndar. Det är lika sanna ord före en omvändelse som efter en omvändelse. Synd=död för både kristna som icke-kristna. Den heliga anden kan hjälpa oss att avhålla oss från synd och då är vi fria.

Joh. 8:34Jesus svarade dem: »Sannerligen, sannerligen säger jag eder: Var och en som gör synd, han är syndens träl.35Men trälen får icke förbliva i huset för alltid; sonen får förbliva där för alltid.36Om nu Sonen gör eder fria, så bliven i verkligen fria.

Vi kan läsa vidare:

Joh 8:52Judarna sade till honom: »Nu förstå vi att du är besatt av en ond ande. Abraham har dött, så ock profeterna, och likväl säger du: ‘Den som håller mitt ord, han skall aldrig någonsin smaka döden.’53Icke är väl du förmer än vår Fader Abraham? Och han har ju dött. Profeterna hava också dött. Till vem gör du då dig själv?»54Jesus svarade: »Om jag själv ville skaffa mig ära, så vore min ära intet; men det är min Fader som förlänar mig ära, han som I säger vara eder Gud.55Dock, I haven icke lärt känna honom, men jag känner honom; och om jag sade att jag icke kände honom, så bleve jag en lögnare likasom I; men jag känner honom och håller hans ord.56Abraham, eder fader, fröjdade sig över att han skulle få se min dag. Han fick se den och blev glad.»

Jesus hävdar alltså att Abraham fröjdade sig över att få se Jesus dag, och att han verkligen fick se den! Om nu Jesus inte existerade förrän han föddes av Maria, hur kommer det sig då att Abraham – som levde hundratals år innan Jesus födelse – kunde få se “Jesus dag”? Om Jesus är Gud så löser sig detta mysterium. (Man skulle också kunna säga att Abraham träffade Jesus i Melkisedeks skepnad.) Jesus kallade sig själv JAG ÄR:

Joh 8:57Då sade judarna till honom: »Femtio år gammal är du icke ännu, och Abraham har du sett!»58Jesus sade till dem: »Sannerligen, sannerligen säger jag eder: Förrän Abraham blev till, är jag.»59Då togo de upp stenar för att kasta på honom. Men Jesus gömde sig undan och gick sedan ut ur helgedomen.

Mark. 14:61-64 “Översteprästen frågade honom vidare: ‘Är du Messias, den Välsignades son?‘ Jesus svarade: ‘Jag Är. Och ni skall få se Människosonen sitta på Maktens högra sida och komma bland himlens moln.’ Då rev översteprästen sönder sina kläder och sade: ‘Behöver vi några fler vittnen? Ni har hört hädelsen. Vad anser ni?’ Alla fann de honom skyldig till döden.”

Joh. 18:4-6″‘Vem söker ni?’ De svarade: ‘Jesus från Nasaret.’ Han sade till dem: ‘JagÄr.‘ Bland dem stod också Judas, han som förrådde honom. När Jesus sade till dem: Jag Är, vek de tillbaka och föll till marken.”

Nej, det råder ingen tvekan. Jesus använder Guds namn på sig själv, och åhörarna tar inte miste på detta. Anledningen till att de vill stena och döda Jesus är att de menar att han hädar.

Johannes 10:33 Judarna svarade honom: »Det är icke för någon god gärnings skull som vi vilja stena dig, utan därför att du hädar och gör dig själv till Gud, du som är en människa.»

Människan är innovativ när det gäller att komma runt Bibelns självklara budskap att Jesus är Gud i mänsklig gestalt. Se vidare i mina artiklar om treenigheten och att Jesus är alltings skapare.

Being carnally minded is DEATH but we can attain moral perfection NOW

Romans 7 is often used as support for that we can have our sins and our salvation too, but we must consider ALL of Romans 7 and particularly Romans 6 and 8.  Paul ends chapter 7 by telling us about the SOLUTION to his problem:

Rom. 7:224O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? 25I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

He also says:

Rom. 6:18Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.19I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.20For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. 21What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is DEATH. 22But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life

Rom. 8:1There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who WALK not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.2For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

1 Cor. 3:3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? 4 For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?

We can all see a distinction between these two claims coming from the same man – PAUL:

Rom. 7:14 — but I am carnal, sold under sin.

Rom. 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death; (but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.)

Clearly Paul couldn’t be both carnal and NOT carnal at the same time. If we are sold under sin we are NOT spiritually alive but spiritually dead. Paul said that as a converted man he lived with a good  conscience void of offense

Acts 23:1And Paul, earnestly beholding the council, said, Men and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day.

Acts 24: 16And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void to offence toward God, and toward men.

2 Tim. 1:3I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;

The description in Romans 7 is not of the converted life of  Paul, but a narration describing what happens when an unconverted sinner’s mind encounters the law of God and is convicted by it.

What does Paul mean with “perfection?

Php. 3:12Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.

Paul was talking about being free from physical corruption and attaining physical perfection, so not the same as MORAL perfection.The verses right before make it clear that he is talking about the resurrection and our new glorified bodies which will not be corrupted:

Php. 3: 10That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; 11If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.

Paul was certainly not saying that moral perfection is unattainable in this life since he continues to say that many have already attained perfection:

Phil. 3:14I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. 15Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you. 16Nevertheless, whereto we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing. 17Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample.).

Not even Jesus was “perfected” until he was resurrected:

Luke 13:32 And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.

Eyes that should not see and ears that should not hear Romans 11:8

According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear (Rom. 11:8)

God does not arbitrarily cause certain unfortunate people to be spiritually blind and deaf and neither does he turn around and punish them for not seeking him – which he prevented them to do in the first place. However, if PEOPLE reject him and rebel against him, he can give them over to a reprobate mind. IF God would be the one to  make people spiritually blind and deaf (for no reason at all), it must mean that they were NOT blind and deaf from the start – despite that they were adults and had been around for a while. (Something for reformed thinkers to think about, because they believe we were all blind and deaf before we are regenerated and able to believe and do good.)

When we check the passages in the Bible where we can read about God giving people over to blindness and deafness, we can see that this is their own fault due to hardening of their own hearts. We can also see that God EXPECTED Israel to see and hear due to the many miracles that he did before them, and he always has great anger towards people who refuse to give up their idols and other sins. In Romans 11:7-11 Paul is referring to Isaiah, so it’s essential that we study the context in Isaiah to understand why people’s eyes and ears have been shut.

Rom 11:7 What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded. 8(According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day.9And David saith, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumbling block, and a recompence unto them: 10Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back alway. 11I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy.

Isaiah 29:9 Stay yourselves, and wonder; cry ye out, and cry: they are drunken, but not with wine; they stagger, but not with strong drink.10 For the Lord hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed your eyes: the prophets and your rulers, the seers hath he covered.11 And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I cannot; for it is sealed:12 And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I am not learned.13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:14 Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.15 Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the Lord, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us?

Isaiah 44:9They that make a graven image are all of them vanity; and their delectable things shall not profit; and they are their own witnesses; they see not, nor know; that they may be ashamed.—17And the residue thereof  he maketh a god, even his graven image: he falleth down unto it, and worshippeth it, and prayeth unto it, and saith, Deliver me; for thou art my god.18They have not known nor understood: for he hath shut their eyes, that they cannot see; and their hearts, that they cannot understand.  19 And none considereth in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire; yea, also I have baked bread upon the coals thereof; I have roasted flesh, and eaten it: and shall I make the residue thereof an abomination? shall I fall down to the stock of a tree?20 He feedeth on ashes: a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?

Ps. 69:22 Let their table become a snare before them: and that which should have been for their welfare, let it become a trap.23 Let their eyes be darkened, that they see not; and make their loins continually to shake.24 Pour out thine indignation upon them, and let thy wrathful anger take hold of them.

Jesus encourages us to walk in the light, LEST darkness will come upon us. and IF we choose to believe in the light, we can become children of light. Despite that Jesus did many miracles, the pharisees still did not believe in him and that is because they had purposed in their hearts to not come to the light. A person who hates the light remains in darkness, and he is spiritually blind.

John 12:35 Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.36 While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.37 But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him:38 That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?39 Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again,40 He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.

John. 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

John. 12:38 is a quote from this passage in the old testament:

Jesaja 6:9 And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.10 Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.11 Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate,12 And the Lord have removed men far away, and there be a great forsaking in the midst of the land.

Compare with this passage where we can see that Paul is blaming people for not being able to see or hear. Paul did his utmost to persuade people to believe in Jesus, but if God is the one to make people spiritually blind and death, Paul would be wasting his time:

 Acts 28:23 And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.24 And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not.25And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers, 26Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive: 27For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have THEY closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. 28Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it.

Other verses in the same chapter (John 12) show man’s free will and responsibility to seek and come to God. Clearly God would not predestine people to NOT believe in him, follow him, confess him, receive him, abide in him, etc. God would not close the door for people, only to ask the same people why they have not seeked him. We can see that there is an option to reject Jesus, and that is of course against God’s will.

John 12:25 He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.26 If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.—42 Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue:43 For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.-—46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.—-48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

Below we can read about people who forsake God and who have eyes that don’t see and ears that don’t hear, and they are considered foolish by God. Naturally he wouldn’t create people to revolt against him and to have rebellious hearts. We can read that it’s their INIQUITIES which have caused themselves to be withheld from the good things of God:

Jer 5:19And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say, Wherefore doeth the LORD our God all these things unto us? then shalt thou answer them, Like as ye have forsaken me, and served strange gods in your land, so shall ye serve strangers in a land that is not your’s. 20Declare this in the house of Jacob, and publish it in Judah, saying, 21Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not: —23But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone. 24Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the LORD our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest. 25Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good things from you. 26For among my people are found wicked men: they lay wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men. 27As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxen rich. 28They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge. 29Shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this? 30A wonderful and horrible thing is committed in the land; 31The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?

Other verses which show that people have eyes that do not see and ears that do not hear – due to their own doingsöga2

Hes. 12:2 Son of man, thou dwellest in the midst of a rebellious house, which have eyes to see, and see not; they have ears to hear, and hear not: for they are a rebellious house. 3Therefore, thou son of man, prepare thee stuff for removing, and remove by day in their sight; and thou shalt remove from thy place to another place in their sight: it may be they will consider, though they be a rebellious house.

Zechariah 7:10 And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart.11 But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear.12 Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the Lord of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the Lord of hosts.13 Therefore it is come to pass, that as he cried, and they would not hear; so they cried, and I would not hear, saith the Lord of hosts:

Ps 135:15 The idols of the heathen are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands. 16They have mouths, but they speak not; eyes have they, but they see not; 17They have ears, but they hear not; neither is there any breath in their mouths. 18They that make them are like unto them: so is every one that trusteth in them.

Verses that show that people can and should seek God in order to find him and get life

Jeremiah 29:13 And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

Isaiah 55:6 Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

1 Chronicles 28:9 And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the Lord searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.

2 Chronicles 15:2 And he went out to meet Asa, and said unto him, Hear ye me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin; The Lord is with you, while ye be with him; and if ye seek him, he will be found of you; but if ye forsake him, he will forsake you.

Romans 10:16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.18 But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world.19 But I say, Did not Israel know? First Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you.20 But Esaias is very bold, and saith, I was found of them that sought me not; I was made manifest unto them that asked not after me.21 But to Israel he saith, All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.

Isaiah 65:1 I am sought of them that asked not for me; I am found of them that sought me not: I said, Behold me, behold me, unto a nation that was not called by my name.2 I have spread out my hands all the day unto a rebellious people, which walketh in a way that was not good, after their own thoughts;3 A people that provoketh me to anger continually to my face; that sacrificeth in gardens, and burneth incense upon altars of brick

Isaiah 45:19 I have not spoken in secret, in a dark place of the earth: I said not unto the seed of Jacob, Seek ye me in vain: I the Lord speak righteousness, I declare things that are right.

It doesn’t say anywhere that God randomly selects people who he will cause to not see or hear. The reason why the farisees did not see or hear is that they chose not to follow Jesus to listen to his teaching and to get edified. Instead they came to him in order to mock him and/or find faults – if they even came to him at all. If people were chosen to be elect/non-elect before the world began, then of course Jesus wouldn’t have to speak in parables in order to hide his message, because the non-elect would be blind and deaf regardless.

Luke 8:10 — Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand

Jesus warns his disciples in the same chapter that they must HEAR in the right way and also DO it, which shows there is a risk they won’t.

Luke 8:18Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have. —21And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.

The Bible doesn’t anywhere that we first must be “regenerated” before we can seek God. God calls us and we must respond, and if we do come to him we must believe that he is, and if we are willing to get to know him we will be revealed the DEEP things of God.

Hebr. 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God MUST BELIEVE THAT HE IS, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently SEEK him.

1 Corinthians 2:10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the DEEP things of God

Romans 1

There is no better passage than Romans 1:18-32 to show the reality of when people reject God even though they know better and have the opportunity to seek him and find him. For this reason God gives them over to reprobation.

Romans 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

Can the leopard change his spots? Not if it has no desire to change

Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil (Jeremiah 13:23)

Jeremiah 2::32 asks “Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? Well, no – what bride would forget her wedding attire? That is simply out of the question, so the answer should then be “NO WAY” and yet we read on:

“—yet my people have forgotten me days without number”.

So the answer is YES after all. Jeremiah 13:23 is a question and not a statement, and it’s like God wants to show Israel how difficult it is for people who are accustomed to do evil and who have hardened their hearts, to change their behavior. But we can be delivered from our sins and spots. We must choose to come to God so he can change us and help us to change our bad habits. If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. What else does Jeremiah 13 tell us? We can read about a group of evil people who refuses to obey God, which is very disturbing to him. Due to their rebellion and their refusal to listen and obey, God will punish them. We can read about a people who have forgotten about God and trusted in FALSEHOOD. Does God want his chosen people to trust in falsehood? Clearly not. We can read that it’s due to their wickedness that God will put them to open shame. It’s due to their own actions which they themselves are responsible for, because God certainly didn’t cause them to perform adulteries, neighings, lewdness of whoredom and other abominations that we can read about. God is mighty upset with his peoole for constantly acting against his will. See for yourself:

10This evil people, which refuse to hear my words, which walk in the imagination of their heart, and walk after other gods, to serve them, and to worship them, shall even be as this girdle, which is good for nothing.11For as the girdle cleaveth to the loins of a man, so have I caused to cleave unto me the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah, saith the LORD; that they might be unto me for a people, and for a name, and for a praise, and for a glory: but they would not hear.

16Give glory to the LORD your God, before he cause darkness, and before your feet stumble upon the dark mountains, and, while ye look for light, he turn it into the shadow of death, and make it gross darkness. 17But if ye will not hear it, my soul shall weep in secret places for your pride; and mine eye shall weep sore, and run down with tears, because the LORD’s flock is carried away captive.

22And if thou say in thine heart, Wherefore come these things upon me? For the greatness of thine iniquity are thy skirts discovered, and thy heels made bare.

23Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil.

24Therefore will I scatter them as the stubble that passeth away by the wind of the wilderness. 25This is thy lot, the portion of thy measures from me, saith the LORD; because thou hast forgotten me, and trusted in falsehood. 26Therefore will I discover thy skirts upon thy face, that thy shame may appear. 27I have seen thine adulteries, and thy neighings, the lewdness of thy whoredom, and thine abominations on the hills in the fields. Woe unto thee, O Jerusalem! wilt thou not be made clean? when shall it once be? 

We are told we can keep ourselves unspotted from the world

James 1:27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

1 Timothy 6:14 That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:

2 Peter 3:14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

Why would God take the time and give so many warning to Israel in Jeremiah (and elsewhere) not to do evil if He knew they were destined to do evil because their nature was evil? A change requires serious effort because of being accustomed to do evil. Jeremiah tells the people to correct their behavior. How can man correct his behavior if he can’t change it and doesn’t have a choice? Man defiles himself by sinning.

Mark 7:20And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.21For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,22Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:23All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

Rom. 2:13(For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.14For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: 15Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)
