Inte födda av köttets vilja utan av GUD, och inte ovillkorligt – Joh. 1:13

Joh. 1:13 De är inte födda av blod eller av köttets vilja eller av någon mans vilja utan av Gud.

Det här visar på Guds roll i vår andliga återfödelse, och det står inte att Gud väljer ut vissa människor som ska födas på nytt utan villkor och utan medtycke från deras sida. Inte heller visar versen att människan har en brist på kapacitet att söka och finna Gud utan att först han blivit “uppväckt”. Vi kan fundera över vad som menas med de saker som står uppräknade som vi INTE är födda utav. “Blod” skulle kunna betyda via släkt (såom att vara födda judar) eller så skulle det kunna vara en referens till det djurblod som blev historia tack vare Jesus fullkomliga och slutgiltiga blodsoffer på korset. “Köttets vilja eller någon mans vilja” skulle kunna betyda att det inte handlar om en födelse som är av mänsklig kraft, eller genom att vi lyckas uppnå en viss grad av gärningar, eller pga människans önskemål. Vi kan inte på egen hand se till att vi passar som Guds barn, för det är endast möjligt genom Jesu blod som kan rena oss från våra synder. Om vi tar bort de saker som vi INTE är födda utav enligt ovan vers, vad har vi kvar då? Vi tar då bort blod, köttets vilja och någon mans vilja, och då har vi kvar “född av Gud”. Bibeln säger även på andra ställen att vi måste vara födda av Gud för att kunna se Guds rike::

Joh. 3:3 Jesus svarade: “Amen, amen säger jag dig: Den som inte blir född på nytt kan inte se Guds rike.“

“Född på nytt” kan också översättas “född ovanifrån” (se Joh. 3:31 ch Joh 19:11 där samma ord används så), alltså född av Gud. En människa kan inte göra så att han tidigare synder raderas, eller se till att han blir en renad ny människa och pånyttfödd, men GUD kan ordna detta – under vissa villkor som hänger på oss.

Hur blir vi födda på nytt? Ungefär så här i korthet:

  • Vi söker Gud och väljer att komma till honom för att få veta mer om honom och för att få liv
  • Vi inser att vi förtjänar döden pga våra synder, och att vi är fullständigt förlorade utan Jesus och hans blod
  • Vi bekänner våra synder
  • Vi omvänder oss från våra tidigare syndfulla liv (hissar vit flagg)
  • Vi beslutar oss för att vandra i lydnad till Jesus med siktet inställt på att vara honom helt trogna
  • DÅ blir vi helt renade från våra tidigare synder tack vare Guds nåd!
  • Vi får den Helige Ande som gåva
  • Vi är sedan rättfärdiga, heliga och pånyttfödda och helt nya rena personer!
  • Vi påminner oss om att Gud aldrig lovat oss “en gång renad allting renad”, men att vi kan stå stadigt om vi följer den Helige Andes ledning som är vår stora hjälp

Kommer vi till Gud måste inställningen vara att han för det första finns, och även att han hörsammar oss som söker honom och belönar oss. Vi som kommer till honom kan ju få lära känna honom ännu mer, och vi kan få den Helige Ande som hjälp i våra liv.

Hebreerbrevet 11:6 Men utan tro är det omöjligt att behaga Gud. Ty den som kommer till Gud måste tro att han är till och belönar dem som söker honom.

Så vi kan under inga omständigheter få oss själva pånyttfödda – oavsett vår egen vilja – för vi har helt enkelt inte den makten som krävs för att rena oss själva och bli fria från våra skulder. Endast Gud kan hjälpa oss med detta så vi måste komma till honom för att låta det ske. Även om vi skulle leva resten av våra liv utan synd så skulle vi ändå inte kunna ordna så att våra tidigare skulder raderas. Tack vare Jesu blod som han utgjöt för oss på korset så kan vi bli rättfärdiga! Petrus säger att vi har räddat våra själar genom att LYDA sanningen. Så får vi evigt liv!

1 Peter 1: 22 Ni har renat era själar genom att lyda sanningen, så att ni älskar varandra uppriktigt som bröder. Älska då varandra uthålligt av rent hjärta. 23 Ni är ju födda på nytt, inte av en förgänglig säd, utan genom en oförgänglig, genom Guds levande ord som består.

Hebr. 5:9 Och när han hade fullkomnats, blev han upphovet till evig frälsning för alla som lyder honom

Verserna före Joh. 1:13 säger att de som har rätten att vara Guds barn är utvalda baserat på vem som “tog emot honom” och som “tror” på Jesus Kristus.  Är det Gud eller människorna som väljer i dessa verser?

John. 1:11 Han kom till sitt eget, och hans egna tog inte emot honom. 12 Men åt alla som tog emot honom gav han rätt att bli Guds barn, åt dem som tror på hans namn.

Vi kan också läsa i samma stycke om att Jesus ger ljus åt alla människor 9 Det sanna ljuset, som ger ljus åt alla människor, skulle nu komma till världen.

Alla har getts tillräckligt med ljus för att kunna tro på Jesus som Frälsaren.

Slutligen kan vi läsa på ett annat ställe i NT att det faktiskt går att vara född på grund av mänsklig vilja, och det gäller tjänarinnan Hagar som fick ett planerat barn tillsammans med Abraham (Ismael). Födelsen av Isak (Abraham och Saras barn) står i motsats till detta.

Gal. 4:22 Där står skrivet att Abraham hade två söner, en med sin slavinna och en med sin fria hustru. 23 Slavinnans son var född av mänsklig vilja, den fria hustruns son däremot i kraft av ett löfte.

Har Gud gett människor ögon som inte ser och öron som inte hör? (Rom. 11:8)

ögaDet står skrivet: Gud har gett dem en likgiltighetens ande, ögon som inte ser och öron som inte hör, och detta ända till denna dag (Rom. 11:8)

Gud är verkligen inte den som orsakar så att vissa stackars människor blir så pass andligt blinda och döva så att de inte kan söka eller finna honom, och sedan STRAFFAR dem på domedagen för att de har mage att inte söka honom eller tro på honom (som han själv förhindrade). Men om däremot MÄNNISKOR vänder honom ryggen och gör sina hjärtan stenhårda så kan Gud till slut utlämna dem till ett ovärdigt sinnelag – som de hela tiden själva varit ute efter. OM Gud nu var tvungen att göra människor andligt blinda och döva så borde ju det betyda att de INTE var andligt blinda och döva från början, eller hur? (Det är framför allt en fråga för de som har en reformert/kalvinistisk inriktning och som tror att Gud först måste “väcka” människor så att de ska kunna tro på honom och göra gott.)  När vi går igenom de avsnitt i Bibeln som handlar om människor som är andligt blinda och döva så kan vi se att i samtliga fall så är det de själva som orsakat deras tragiska belägenhet. Vi kan också se att Gud FÖRVÄNTADE sig att Israel skulle söka honom och lyda honom eftersom han tydligt visat sig för dem och uppvisat många mirakel. Men eftersom de genom historien visat sig vara motsträviga och rebelliska så har han med rätta varit vred på sitt folk som vägrat ge upp sina falska gudar och sina djupa synder. I Rom 11:7-11 så refererar Paulus till Jesaja, så det är viktigt att vi studerar sammanhanget i Jesaja för att förstå varför människors ögon och öron tillsluts. Gör vi det ser vi att det är deras eget fel.

Rom 11:7 Vad följer då av detta? Jo, vad Israel strävar efter har det inte uppnått. De utvalda har nått det, men de andra har blivit förstockade. 8 Det står skrivet: Gud har gett dem en likgiltighetens ande, ögon som inte ser och öron som inte hör, och detta ända till denna dag. 9 Och David säger: Må deras bord bli en snara och ett nät, en fälla och ett straff för dem. 10 Må deras ögon bli förmörkade, så att de inte ser, och böj deras rygg för alltid.11 Jag frågar nu: Inte har de väl snubblat för att de skulle falla? Visst inte. Men genom deras fall har frälsningen kommit till hedningarna, för att detta skulle väcka deras avund.

Jesaja 29:9 Häpna och förundras,  stirra er blinda, ja, var blinda. De är druckna, men inte av vin, de raglar, men inte av starka drycker.10 Ty Herren har utgjutit över er en ande med djup sömn och tillslutit era ögon.  Han har höljt mörker över profeterna och över siarna, era ledare.11 All uppenbarelse har för er blivit som orden i en förseglad bok. Räcker man en sådan bok åt någon som kan läsa och säger: “Läs detta,” så svarar han: “Jag kan det inte, den är ju förseglad.” 12 Och räcker man den åt någon som inte kan läsa och säger: “Läs detta”, så svarar han: “Jag kan inte läsa.”13 Herren har sagt:  Eftersom detta folk nalkas mig med sin mun och ärar mig med sina läppar  men låter sitt hjärta vara långt ifrån mig, är fruktan för mig  bara ett inlärt människobud.14 Se, DÄRFÖR skall jag ännu en gång  göra underbara ting med detta folk, ja, underbara och förunderliga. De visas vishet skall förgå, de förståndigas förstånd skall förmörkas.

Jesaja 44:9 De som tillverkar avgudar är alla idel tomhet, deras kära gudar kan inte hjälpa. Deras egna vittnen ser inget och förstår inget. Därför måste de komma på skam.—17 Men av det som är kvar gör man en gud, en avgudabild. För den faller man ner och tillber.  Man bönfaller inför den och säger: “Rädda mig, för du är min gud.” 18 Dessa människor vet ingenting och förstår ingenting, ty deras ögon är tillslutna, så att de inte ser, och deras hjärtan, så att de ingenting begriper.19 Ingen har så mycken eftertanke, så mycket vett eller förstånd att han säger: “En del av det har jag bränt upp i eld, på kolen har jag bakat bröd och stekt kött och har nu ätit. Skulle jag då av resten göra en avskyvärd avgud? Skulle jag falla ner för ett stycke trä?” 20 Den som lever av aska  är förledd av ett vilselett hjärta, så att han inte kan rädda sin själ eller tänka: “Är det inte lögn det jag håller i min högra hand?”

Ps. 69:22 De gav mig galla att äta och ättika att dricka i min törst.23 Låt deras bord framför dem bli en snara och en fälla för de säkra. 24 Låt deras ögon bli förmörkade så att de ej ser, låt deras höfter ständigt vackla. 25 Utgjut din vrede över dem, låt din vredesglöd hinna upp dem.

Jesus uppmanar här nedan folket att TRO PÅ LJUSET så att inte mörkret övervinner dem. OM vi väljer att tro på honom så kan vi bli ljusets barn. Eftersom Jesus uppmanar oss till detta så betyder det att vi har chans att uppnå det han utlovar, och det gäller oss alla. Trots att Jesus gjorde många mirakel så trodde fariséerna inte på honom, och det beror på att de inte ville komma till ljuset för att få liv. Då blir de i stället förblindade när de är kvar  mörkret.

Joh. 12:35 Jesus sade till dem: “Ännu en kort tid är ljuset ibland er. Vandra medan ni har ljuset, så att mörkret inte övervinner er. Den som vandrar i mörkret vet inte vart han går. 36 Tro på ljuset, medan ni har ljuset, så att ni blir ljusets barn.” När Jesus hade sagt detta drog han sig tillbaka och dolde sig för dem.37 Fastän han hade gjort så många tecken inför dem, trodde de inte på honom. 38 Så uppfylldes profeten Jesajas ord: Herre, vem trodde vad som predikades för oss, och för vem var Herrens arm uppenbarad? 39 Alltså kunde de inte tro. Jesaja har också sagt: 40 Han har förblindat deras ögon och förstockat deras hjärtan, så att de inte ser med sina ögon och förstår med sina hjärtan och vänder om och blir botade av mig.

Joh. 3:19 Och detta är domen: ljuset kom till världen och människorna älskade mörkret och inte ljuset, eftersom deras gärningar var onda. 20 Ty var och en som gör det onda hatar ljuset och kommer inte till ljuset, för att hans gärningar inte skall avslöjas. 21 Men den som lyder sanningen kommer till ljuset, för att det skall bli uppenbart att hans gärningar är gjorda i Gud.”

Joh. 12:38 är en referens till bland annat detta avsnitt:

Jesaja 6:9  Och jag hörde Herrens röst. Han sade: “Vem skall jag sända och vem vill vara vår budbärare?” Då sade jag: “Här är jag, sänd mig!” 9 Han sade: “Gå och säg till detta folk: Ni skall höra och höra, men inte förstå, och ni skall se och se, men inte begripa.10 Förhärda detta folks hjärta, gör deras öron döva och deras ögon blinda, så att de inte ser med sina ögon, hör med sina öron  eller förstår med sitt hjärta och vänder om och blir helade.“Då frågade jag: “Hur länge, Herre?” Han svarade: “Till dess städerna blir öde och ingen bor i dem, husen blir utan folk och landet ligger öde och övergivet.12 Herren skall sända folket långt bort, och ödsligheten skall bli stor i landet. 13 När bara en tiondel är kvar i det, skall även den ödeläggas som en terebint eller en ek, av vilken en stubbe lämnas kvar när den fälls. Den stubben skall vara en helig säd.”

Jämför också med nedan parti där vi kan se att Paulus beskyller människorna själva för sin blindhet och dövhet:

Apg 28:23 De bestämde en dag för honom, och då kom ännu fler till hans bostad. För dem förkunnade han Guds rike och vittnade om det, och han försökte övertyga dem om Jesus, både utifrån Mose lag och profeterna. Och det höll han på med från morgonen ända till kvällen.24 Somliga lät sig övertygas av hans ord, men andra ville inte tro. 25 Eftersom de inte kunde komma överens skildes de åt, sedan Paulus hade sagt detta enda ord: “Den helige Ande talade rätt genom profeten Jesaja till era fäder 26 när han sade: Gå till detta folk och säg: Även om ni hör, skall ni inte förstå, och även om ni ser, skall ni inte inse. 27 TY detta folks hjärta är förstockat. De hör illa med sina öron, och DE SLUTER sina ögon, SÅ ATT de inte ser med ögonen eller hör med öronen eller förstår med hjärtat och vänder om, så att jag får bota dem. 28 Därför skall ni veta att denna Guds frälsning är sänd till hedningarna, och de kommer att lyssna.”

Andra verser i Joh. 12 visar på människans fria vilja och ansvar att söka och komma till Gud. Självfallet skulle Gud aldrig stänga dörren för människor för att sedan fråga dem varför de aldrig sökt honom. Vi kan läsa att det finns ett alternativ att faktiskt förkasta Jesus, och självfallet är detta emot Guds vilja.

Joh. 12:25 Den som älskar sitt liv förlorar det, och den som hatar sitt liv i den här världen, han skall bevara det och vinna evigt liv. 26 Om någon vill tjäna mig, skall han följa mig, och där jag är kommer också min tjänare att vara. Om någon tjänar mig, skall min Fader ära honom.—42 Ändå var det många, även bland medlemmarna i Stora rådet, som trodde på honom. Men för fariseernas skull ville de inte bekänna det, för att de inte skulle bli uteslutna ur synagogan. 43 De ville hellre bli ärade av människor än av Gud.—46 Jag är ljuset som har kommit till världen, för att ingen som tror på mig skall bli kvar i mörkret.—48 Den som förkastar mig och inte tar emot mina ord, han har en domare över sig: det ord som jag har talat skall döma honom på den yttersta dagen.

Nedan kan vi läsa om människor som inte vill ha något med Gud att göra, och som har ögon som inte ser och öron som inte hör. De anses vara dåraktiga i Guds ögon för att de försatt sig i en sådan situation. Självfallet skulle aldrig Gud orsaka så att människor gör uppror mot honom, och vi kan läsa att det är deras MISSGÄRNINGAR som får dem att bli separerade från Gud och gå miste om allt det goda.

Jer 5:19 Om ni då frågar: “Varför har Herren, vår Gud, gjort oss allt detta?” skall du svara dem: “Liksom ni har övergivit mig och tjänat främmande gudar i ert eget land, skall ni nu få tjäna främlingar i ett land som inte är ert.”—21 Hör detta, du dåraktiga folk utan förstånd! Ni har ögon och ser inte,  ni har öron och hör inte.—. 23 Men detta folk har ett motsträvigt och upproriskt hjärta. De har vänt sig bort och gått sin egen väg. 24 De säger inte i sina hjärtan:”Låt oss frukta Herren, vår Gud, honom som ger regn i rätt tid både höst och vår och som ger oss de bestämda skördeveckorna.”25 Era missgärningar har nu bringat detta i olag, era synder håller detta goda borta från er. 26 Ty bland mitt folk finns ogudaktiga människor. De ligger i bakhåll liksom fågelfängaren ligger på lur, de sätter ut snaror och fångar människor.27 Som en bur full av fåglar så är deras hus fulla av svek. Därför har de blivit stora och rika, de har blivit feta och skinande.28 Deras onda gärningar vet inte av någon gräns, de dömer inte rättvist,  de verkar inte för den faderlöses sak och hjälper inte den fattige att få sin rätt. 29 Skulle jag inte straffa dem för sådant? säger Herren. Skulle jag inte hämnas på ett hednafolk som detta? 30 Förfärliga och fruktansvärda ting sker i landet.31 Profeterna profeterar lögn, och prästerna styr efter deras råd. Så vill mitt folk ha det. Men vad skall ni göra när slutet på detta kommer?

Ännu fler verser som visar att människor har ögon som inte ser och öron som inte hör – pga att de själva gjort sina hjärtan hårdaöga2

Hes. 12:2 “Du människobarn, du bor mitt ibland ett upproriskt folk. De har ögon att se med, men ser inte. De har öron att höra med, men hör inte, EFTERSOM de är ett upproriskt folk. 3 Du människobarn, gör dig i ordning för att gå i landsflykt. Gå i landsflykt inför deras ögon på ljusa dagen, vandra bort från din plats till en annan ort inför dem. Kanske skall de då inse att de är ett upproriskt folk.

Sakaria 7:10 Förtryck inte änkan och den faderlöse, främlingen och den fattige  och tänk inte ut ont mot varandra i era hjärtan.”11 Men de ville inte ge akt på detta utan var upproriska och stängde till sina öron så att de inte hörde. 12 De gjorde sina hjärtan hårda som diamant så att de inte hörde den undervisning och de ord som Herren Sebaot genom sin Ande hade sänt genom gångna tiders profeter. Därför kom stor vrede från Herren Sebaot. 13 Och liksom de inte ville höra när han ropade, vill jag inte höra när de ropar, sade Herren Sebaot.

Ps 135:15 Hednafolkens avgudar är silver och guld, verk av människohänder. 16 De har mun men talar inte, ögon men ser inte,17 de har öron men hör inte,  ingen andedräkt finns i deras mun.18 De som har gjort dem kommer att likna dem, ja, alla som förtröstar på dem.

5 Mos. 29:2 Mose kallade samman hela Israel och sade till dem: Ni har sett allt vad Herren har gjort inför era ögon i Egyptens land med farao och alla hans tjänare och hela hans land, 3 de stora prövningar som du med egna ögon har sett, de stora tecknen och undren. 4 Men ännu till denna dag har Herren inte gett er hjärtan till att förstå, ögon till att se och öron till att höra.—18 Men bland er får det inte finnas någon man eller kvinna, någon släkt eller stam som i sitt hjärta i dag vänder sig bort ifrån Herren, vår Gud, för att gå bort och tjäna dessa hednafolks gudar. Bland er får det inte finnas någon rot som frambringar gift och malört, 19 så att någon som hör detta edsförbunds ord välsignar sig i sitt hjärta och tänker att det skall gå honom väl, där han vandrar i sitt hjärtas hårdhet. Ty då skall hela landet, både vått och torrt, förgås.20 Herren skall inte vara villig att förlåta honom. Herrens vrede och nitälskan skall då vara som en rykande eld mot den mannen, och varje förbannelse som är uppskriven i denna bok kommer att vila på honom, och Herren skall utplåna hans namn under himlen. —24 ja, alla folk skall då säga: “Varför har Herren gjort så mot detta land? Varför brinner hans vrede så starkt?”25 Och man skall svara: “Därför att de övergav det förbund som Herren, deras fäders Gud, slöt med dem när han förde dem ut ur Egyptens land. 26 De gick bort och tjänade andra gudar och tillbad dem, gudar som de inte kände och som han inte hade tilldelat dem.

Markus 8:17 Jesus märkte det och frågade dem: “Varför säger ni att ni inte har bröd? Begriper och förstår ni ännu ingenting? Har ni ett hjärta som är så hårt? 18 Har ni ögon och ser inte och öron och hör inte? Kommer ni inte ihåg 19 när jag bröt de fem bröden åt de fem tusen? Hur många korgar fulla med brödstycken fick ni då?” De svarade: “Tolv.”

Verser som visar att människor kan och bör söka Gud så att de kan finna honom och få liv

Jeremia 29:13 Ni skall söka mig, och ni skall också finna mig om ni sökermig av hela ert hjärta.

Jesaja 55:6 Sök Herren medan han låter sig finnas, åkalla honom medan han är nära.

1 Krönikeboken 28:9 Du, min son Salomo, må lära känna din fars Gud och tjäna honom med hängivet hjärta och med villig själ, ty Herren rannsakar alla hjärtan och förstår alla uppsåt och tankar. Om du söker honom, låter han sig finnas av dig, men om du överger honom, då förkastar han dig för evigt.

2 Krönikeboken 15:2 Han gick ut mot Asa och sade till honom: “Hör mig, du Asa, och ni hela Juda och Benjamin. Herren är med er när ni är med honom, och om ni söker honom låter han sig finnas av er. Men om ni överger honom kommer han att överge er

Rom. 10:16 Men alla ville inte lyda evangeliet. Jesaja säger:Herre, vem trodde vår predikan? 17 Alltså kommer tron av predikan och predikan i kraft av Kristi ord. 18 Men nu frågar jag: Har de kanske inte hört? Jo, mer än så: Deras röst har gått ut över hela jorden och deras ord till världens ändar. 19 Jag frågar också: Har Israel kanske inte förstått? Först säger Mose: Jag skall väcka er avund mot ett folk som inte är ett folk, mot ett folk utan förstånd skall jag väcka er vrede. 20 Och Jesaja går så långt att han säger: Jag lät mig finnas av dem som inte sökte mig, jag uppenbarade mig för dem som inte frågade efter mig. 21 Men om Israel säger han: Hela dagen har jag räckt ut mina händer mot ett olydigt och trotsigt folk.

Jesaja 65:1 Jag låter mig sökas av dem som inte frågade efter mig, jag låter mig finnas av dem som inte sökte mig. Till ett folk som inte åkallade mitt namn sade jag: “Här är jag, här är jag.“2 Hela dagen har jag räckt ut mina händer mot ett trotsigt folk,  som vandrar på den väg som inte är god, som följer sina egna tankar, 3 ett folk som ständigt kränker mig rakt i ansiktet. De bär fram offer i trädgårdar och tänder offereld på tegelaltaren

Jesaja 45:19 I hemlighet har jag inte talat på en mörk plats på jorden. Jag har inte sagt till Jakobs avkomlingar: “Förgäves skall ni söka mig.”  – Jag är Herren, som talar sanning och förkunnar vad som är rätt.—Vänd er till mig och bli frälsta, ni jordens alla ändar, ty jag är Gud och det finns ingen annan.

Fariséerna gjorde det dåliga valet att inte följa efter Jesus, lyssna på honom och försöka förstå honom och evangeliet. I stället försökte de att hitta fel så att de skulle kunna få skäl att sätta dit Jesus inför Stora Rådet.  Därför talade Jesus i liknelser. Ville man förstå honom så hade man möjligheter till det, men om man beslutat sig för att i stället söka efter fel och göra sitt hjärta hårt så fanns även detta alternativ. Om människor varit förutbestämda till himmel eller helvete redan innan jordens början så hade förstås Jesus inte behövt tala i liknelser för att dölja något som redan är dolt. Om vissa människor är utvalda till frälsning så skulle det inte spela någon som helst roll om Jesus talade i liknelser eller inte eftersom människors kunskap och förutbestämda slutdestination inte skulle kunna ändras på minsta vis.

Lukas 8:10 Han svarade: “Ni har fått nåden att förstå Guds rikes hemligheter, men de andra får dem i liknelser, för att de skall se och ändå inte se och höra och ändå inte förstå.

 Jesus varnar sina lärljungar i samma kapitel att de måste ta sig i akt på vad de hör och att de måste handla efter vad de hörsammat, vilket betyder att det finns en risk för motsatsen:

Lukas 8:8 Ge därför akt på vad ni hör. Ty den som har skall få, men den som inte har, från honom skall tas också det han tror sig ha.—21 Han svarade dem: “Min mor och mina bröder är de som hör Guds ord och handlar efter det.”

Vi kan komma till Gud och lära känna honom, och Bibeln säger inte att vi först måste “väckas” på något sätt för att kunna komma. Gud kallar oss och vi måste välja att komma eller inte. Kommer vi till honom så måste vi först tro att han är, och då har vi även möjlighet att få vet mer om DJUPEN i Gud. Vi kan alltså få ännu mer vishet och ledning.

Hebr. 11:6 Men utan tro är det omöjligt att behaga Gud. Ty den som kommer till Gud måste tro att han är till och belönar dem som söker honom.

1 Kor. 2:9 Men vi känner, som Skriften säger, vad ögat inte har sett och örat inte hört och människohjärtat inte kunnat ana, vad Gud har berett åt dem som älskar honom. 10 Ty för oss har Gud uppenbarat det genom sin Ande. Anden utforskar allt, också djupen i Gud.

Romarbrevet 1

Det finns inget bättre avsnitt än Rom 1:18-32 för att visa på hur människor tar avstånd från Gud trots att de vet bättre. DÄRFÖR utlämnade Gud dem till ett ovärdigt sinnelag.

Rom. 1:18 Guds vrede uppenbaras från himlen över all ogudaktighet och orättfärdighet hos människor som i orättfärdighet undertrycker sanningen. 19 Det man kan veta om Gud är uppenbart bland dem, Gud har ju uppenbarat det för dem.20 Ända från världens skapelse ses och uppfattas hans osynliga egenskaper, hans eviga makt och gudomliga natur genom de verk som han har skapat. Därför är de utan ursäkt.21 Fastän de kände till Gud, prisade de honom inte som Gud eller tackade honom, utan förblindades av sina falska föreställningar, så att mörkret sänkte sig över deras oförståndiga hjärtan. 22 De påstod att de var visa, men de blev dårar. 23 De bytte ut den odödlige Gudens härlighet mot bilder av dödliga människor, av fåglar, fyrfotadjur och kräldjur. 24 Därför utlämnade Gud dem så att de följde sina egna begär och bedrev allt slags otukt och förnedrade sina kroppar. 25 De bytte ut Guds sanning mot lögnen och tog sig för att dyrka och tjäna det skapade i stället för Skaparen, han som är välsignad i evigheter, amen.26 Därför utlämnade Gud dem till skamliga lidelser. Deras kvinnor bytte ut det naturliga umgänget mot det onaturliga. 27 På samma sätt övergav männen det naturliga umgänget med kvinnan och upptändes av begär till varandra. Män bedrev otukt med män och fick själva ta det rättvisa straffet för sin förvillelse. 28 Och eftersom de inte ansåg det vara något värt att ha kunskap om Gud, utlämnade Gud dem åt ett ovärdigt sinnelag, så att de gjorde sådant som är mot naturen. 29 De har blivit uppfyllda av allt slags orättfärdighet, ondska, girighet och elakhet, de är fulla av avund, mordlust, stridslystnad, svek och illvilja. 30 De skvallrar och förtalar, de hatar Gud och brukar våld. De skrävlar och skryter och tänker ut allt ont. De lyder inte sina föräldrar, 31 är oförståndiga och trolösa, kärlekslösa och hjärtlösa. 32 Sådant gör de, fastän de mycket väl känner till Guds rättvisa dom, att de som handlar så är värda döden. Ja, de samtycker också till att andra gör det.

Vem gör människan stum, döv, seende eller blind? Herren? (2 Mose. 4:11)

blygerLåt oss läsa 2 Mos. 4:11 i sitt sammanhang för att undvika missförstånd. Ovan vers handlar om Mose som argumenterar med Gud att han (Mose) inte skulle vara lämplig som Israels ledare pga sin tröga tunga – eller ska vi kalla det blyghet?

2 Mos. 4:6 Herren sade ytterligare till honom: “Stick in handen i barmen!” Han gjorde så, och när han drog ut handen, se, då var den vit som snö av spetälska.7 Sedan sade Gud: “Stick tillbaka handen i barmen!” Mose gjorde så, och när han drog ut den igen, se, då var den på nytt som hans övriga kropp. 8 Och Herren sade: “Om de inte tror dig eller ger akt på det första tecknet, så måste de tro på det andra tecknet. 9 Men om de inte ens tror på dessa två tecken eller lyssnar till dina ord, tag då av Nilens vatten och häll ut det på torra marken. Vattnet som du tagit ur floden skall då förvandlas till blod på torra marken.”

Gud ämnar alltså att ge Mose ett ganska bra äss i ärmen genom att möjliggöra att MIRAKEL ska kunna ske från hans (Moses) händer! Gud visade även prov på dessa mirakel för att verkligen få Mose att förstå att det fungerar i verkligheten och inte bara är en skrivbordsprodukt. Det intressanta är att Gud uttrycker sig som att utgången för hur människor kommer att tolka dessa mirakel är oviss och det verkar inte som han själv ens är säker på den exakta utgången eftersom han säger “Om de inte tror dig eller ger akt på det första tecknet—“, “Men om de inte ens tror på dessa två tecken...”. Det finns alltså ett par olika alternativ som skulle kunna vara möjliga och Gud säger inte åt Mose just i det här stadiet exakt vad som kommer att ske. (Vid många andra tillfällen så säger Gud med exakthet vad som kommer att ske i framtiden.) Gud undervisar Mose även om ytterligare mirakel som kan utföras för att försöka övertala människorna. Då invänder Mose:

10 —“Men Herre, jag är ingen talför man. Jag har inte varit det tidigare, och jag är det inte heller nu sedan du har talat till din tjänare. Jag är trög att tala och har en trög tunga.” 

Som svar använder Gud då Moses egna exempel – trög att tala och med en trög tunga – tillbaka till honom själv. På svenska låter det som att Gud är den som med flit gör en människa stum eller döv. Läser vi texten på engelska är poängen i stället att Gud gör alla människor – inklusive de människor som är döva och stumma. Inte att han avsiktligt GÖR dem döva eller stumma.

11 Herren sade till honom: “Vem har givit människan munnen och vem gör henne stum eller döv, seende eller blind? Är det inte jag, Herren? 12 Gå nu! Jag skall vara med din mun och lära dig vad du skall säga.” 

11 And the Lord said unto him, Who hath made man’s mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the Lord? (KJV)

Eftersom det inte kan vara en individs fel att bli född döv eller stum, och ingen annan individs fel heller för den delen, så måste det faktum att människor KAN födas med dessa handikapp härledas till Gud själv. Därmed inte sagt att Gud VILL att människor ska födas på det sättet. Han är bara orsaken till att världen är uppbyggd som den är och att risken för sjukdomar finns i en fallen värld. Gud ville heller inte att världen skulle vara fallen, och inte att Adam och Eva skulle synda och orsaka fysisk död för sina efterkommande, men han visste såklart att risken för olydnad fanns och därmed att det fanns risk för DÖD.  Så fungerar helt enkelt en värld med fri vilja, och alla andra skapelsealternativ skulle bara vara sämre. Gud gjorde som bekant något åt situationen när han lät sin enfödde son dö för våra synder, och tack och lov behöver vi inte leva i evighet på den här fallna jorden. En fördel med “eländes elände” kan vara att människor har en tendens att söka Gud på ett mer intensivt sätt än om de skulle leva i ständig komfort. Det har vi många exempel på även i Bibeln. Däremot inte sagt att sjukdomar och död absolut måste vara enligt Guds vilja för det finns en rad svårigheter som aldrig i livet skulle kunna ingå i Guds planer. Skulle 37.000 aborter per år i Sverige vara enligt Guds vilja? Det har jag svårt att tro. Hur som helst så vill Gud i det här bibelavsnittet bara förklara för Mose – genom att återanvända Moses egna argument och ordval – att argumenten faktiskt var ganska dåliga med tanke på att Moses samtalspartner faktiskt är GUD SJÄLV som är alltings skapare och faktiskt känner till allas begränsningar och möjligheter. Tänk om Gud skulle svara:

“Jamen, det har du ju alldeles rätt i, Mose. Du har ju faktiskt en väldigt trög tunga så hur skulle du kunna vara Israels ledare? Att du inte har talang som en stor talare är ju faktiskt helt omöjligt att göra något åt. Du är ju född så och ingen kan någonsin ändra på hur du fungerar i din natur. Såsom man är född är precis så man måste förbli”.

I stället säger Gud “GÅ NU” efter att ha förklarat att han faktiskt är Gud över allt och därför har han kapacitet att också ändra på sakernas bestånd. Men trots de mirakel som Mose fått se så litar han fortfarande inte på sin egen kapacitet, trots löftena från Gud:

13 Men Mose sade: “Herre, jag ber dig: Sänd ditt budskap med vilken annan du vill.” 14 Då upptändes Herrens vrede mot Mose och han sade: “Har du inte din bror Aron, leviten? Jag vet att han är en man som kan tala. Och se, han är på väg för att möta dig, och när han får se dig skall han känna glädje i sitt hjärta. 15 Du skall tala till honom och lägga orden i hans mun. Och jag skall vara med din mun och hans mun, och jag skall lära er vad ni skall göra. 16 Han skall tala i ditt ställe till folket. Han skall vara som en mun för dig, och du skall vara som Gud för honom. 17 Du skall ta den här staven i handen, och med den skall du göra dina tecken.”

Jag vill inte gärna tro att Gud är arg på Mose p g a hans frågor om hur i all sin dar han (Mose) ska kunna vara en bra ledare med den tunghäftan som han lider av. Det kan väl aldrig vara fel att uttrycka sina farhågor och be om hjälp avGud när man känner att man kommer till korta? Det är ju därför vi BER ibland. I stället tror jag att Gud är vred på Mose för att han helt enkelt går emot Guds planer och faktiskt vill avsäga sig hela uppdraget TROTS att Gud visat honom att han kommer att vara med honom på ett helt fantastiskt sätt där MIRAKEL kan ske från hans händer, och trots att Gud ber Mose att helt enkelt lyda honom och lita på honom. Varför säga nej till Skaparen? Det låter som Gud redan hade allting uträknat redan innan Mose knorrade. Det verkar nämligen som Gud hade Aron i baktankarna redan från första början så Mose hade inte behövt tveka över uppdraget och spjärna emot. Gud gav inte Mose uppdrag som han inte skulle kunna klara av på ett eller annat sätt. I det här fallet så verkar inte Gud vara motiverad att ändra på Moses natur och göra honom till en pratglad och social person, utan han lät Aron vara den som fick prata i Moses ställe.

Den här situationen är faktiskt något som vi kan ta lärdom av idag på olika sätt. Det kan absolut vara så att vi inte passar för allehanda uppdrag och funktioner pga att vi inte har personligheter för det, men om det är Guds vilja så kan han lösa det på sätt som inte handlar om att hela vår personlighet måste ändras. Vi är helt enkelt olika till sättet och bra på vissa saker och dåliga på andra, men om något är Guds vilja så finns det sätt att komma runt det som vi kanske inte tänkt på. Det är hur som helst bra att vi nämner våra funderingar och eventuella farhågor inför Gud, men inte att göra som Mose – som direkt ville kasta in handduken inför uppdraget – utan att höra vidare om Gud faktiskt hade några konkreta planer för hur hela uppdraget skulle lyckas. Hade Moses lugnat sig lite så kanske han hade fått höra att hans bror redan var på väg till honom och att de två skulle bli ett kanonbra team tillsammans.

För en oandlig människa är kunskapen om Gud en dårskap (1 Kor. 2:14)

1 Kor. 2:14 En oandlig människa tar inte emot det som tillhör Guds Ande. Det är dårskap för henne, och hon kan inte förstå det, eftersom det måste bedömas på ett andligt sätt.

Eftersom Paulus här säger att en oandlig människa (eller en “själisk” människa som det står i 1917 års översättning) inte tar emot det som tillhör Guds Ande och inte kan förstå, så är det ett mycket dåligt val att vara just en oandlig människa. Det bättre alternativet är förstås att vara en andlig människa så att vi kan ta del av hela Guds djuphet. Jag säger detta eftersom en del gärna vill tolka den här versen som att Gud på något sätt stänger frälsningens dörr för de flesta människor för att i stället välja ut några få lyckliga som han ger möjligheten att se hans ljus. Sanningen är ju att Gud vill att ALLA ska bli frälsta och han har därför gett alla en chans att söka honom och finna honom. Paulus talar om människor inte tar emot det som tillhör Guds ande, vilket visar att det faktiskt finns ett alternativ att göra det motsatta –  att ta emot.  Men om människor insisterar på att vända Gud ryggen, inte vilja söka honom, inte vilja be och inte vilja läsa hans ord i Bibeln, ja då är de oandliga människor som är kvar i mörkret, och då kan de heller inte förstå budskapet som de ju envist vägrar att ta emot. Det står i versen att oandliga människor inte KAN förstå det (som tillhör Guds ande) och det är just för att de inte VILL. Vägrar man att komma till ljuset kan man heller inte se ljuset.

Under Jesu tid var det de som följde honom som fick ta del av Guds ljus och få chansen att höra tolkningar av diverse liknelser, medan vissa fariséer  valde att inte komma honom nära för att lära sig mer utan i stället höll sig på sin egen kant och diskuterade hur de kunde sätta dit honom och få honom dömd. Dessa fariseer är ett bra exempel på oandliga människor, och  Romarbrevet 1 kan också lära oss en hel del om hur människor själva orsakar så att de förhärdar sina hjärtan.

1 Kor. 2:14 måste förstås läsas i sitt sammanhang.

1 Korinthierbrevet 2:1 När jag kom till er, bröder, var det inte med stor vältalighet eller hög visdom som jag predikade Guds hemlighet för er.  

“Hemlighet” kan även översättas med “Guds vittnesbörd”, så det handlar alltså inte om hemligheter som Gud väljer att ge endast några lyckligt lottade.

1 Kor. 2:4 Och mitt tal och min predikan bestod inte i ord som skulle övertyga genom mänsklig visdom utan genom en bevisning i Ande och kraft. 5 Vi ville inte att er tro skulle bygga på människors visdom utan på Guds kraft.6 Vishet förkunnar vi emellertid bland de fullkomliga, en vishet som inte tillhör den här världen eller den här världens härskare, som går mot sin undergång. 7 Nej, vi förkunnar Guds hemliga vishet, den vishet som är fördold och som Gud från evighet har bestämt att bli till härlighet för oss. 

Jämför ovan andliga kraft och vishet med andra verser om Andens kraft. Självfallet är “vishet” i form av förklaringar och resonemang kring detaljer i skriften också av stort värde, men först måste vi förstå själva evangeliets grund för att komma vidare.

Apg. 1: 4 Vid en måltid tillsammans med apostlarna befallde han dem: “Lämna inte Jerusalem utan vänta på vad Fadern har utlovat, det som ni har hört av mig. 5 Ty Johannes döpte med vatten, men ni skall om några dagar bli döpta i den helige Ande.”

Apg. 1:8 Men när den helige Ande kommer över er, skall ni få kraft och bli mina vittnen i Jerusalem och i hela Judeen och Samarien och ända till jordens yttersta gräns.”

Markus 13:11 När man för bort er och utlämnar er, så gör er inte bekymmer för vad ni skall säga. Vad som ges er i den stunden skall ni tala. Det är inte ni som då talar, utan den helige Ande.

1 Kor. 2: 9 Men vi känner, som Skriften säger, vad ögat inte har sett och örat inte hört och människohjärtat inte kunnat ana, vad Gud har berett åt dem som älskar honom. 10 Ty för oss har Gud uppenbarat det genom sin Ande. Anden utforskar allt, också djupen i Gud. 11 Vem vet vad som finns i människan utom människans egen ande? Så vet heller ingen vad som är i Gud utom Guds Ande. 12 Men vi har inte fått världens ande, utan den Ande som är från Gud, för att vi skall veta vad vi har fått av Gud. —14 En oandlig människa tar inte emot det som tillhör Guds Ande. Det är dårskap för henne, och hon kan inte förstå det, eftersom det måste bedömas på ett andligt sätt. 15 Den andliga människan däremot bedömer allt, men själv kan hon inte bedömas av någon.

Vi kan läsa ovan att Gud har berett “vad ögat inte har sett och örat inte hört” (alltså hemligheten) ÅT DEM SOM ÄLSKAR HONOM. Att älska honom är alltså villkoret för att kunna ta del av djupen i Gud. Vi kan också läsa att den ANDLIGA människan, till skillnad mot den oandliga människan, kan bedöma allt. Den andliga människan har ju valt att ta emot av det som Anden ger. Grunden i evangeliet är det primära som en Gudssökande bör ta del utav och det kan betraktas som “mjölk” och inte “kött” som är nästa nivå vad gäller vishet.  1 Kor. 2:14 säger inte att en oandlig människan inte kan ta emot någonting alls av Gud  eftersom vi redan vet att alla har alla möjlighet att förstå och lära känna Gud tack vare en tydlig skapelse med alla tecken på design, ett samvete, skriftens profetior och tio Guds bud som manar människor att komma till honom och lyda honom.

Några andra verser som brukar användas när det handlar om idén att Gud inte skulle bry sig om att det stora flertalet är kvar i mörkret är de som står nämnda nedan. Jag har med grönt markerat de verserna som brukar nämnas för att försöka visa att vi alla är andligt döda ända tills Gud tar sitt magiska trollspö och gör oss levande (de som han vill) genom att ge vissa av oss förmågan att söka honom, tro på honom och finns djupheten i honom. Läs hela kontexten och du ser att människan har full valfrihet att lyda anden i stället för köttet.grace

1 Kor. 1:18 Ty detta budskap om korset är en dårskap för dem som blir förtappade, men för oss som blir frälsta är det en Guds kraft. 19 Det står ju skrivet: Jag skall göra de visas visdom om intet, och de förståndigas förstånd skall jag slå ner. *) 20 Var är de visa? Var är de skriftlärda? Var är den här världens ordvrängare? Har inte Gud gjort den här världens visdom till dårskap? 21 Jo, eftersom världen i sin visdom inte lärde känna Gud i hans vishet, beslöt Gud att genom den dårskap som vi predikar frälsa dem som tror. 22 Ty judarna begär tecken och grekerna söker visdom. 23 Men vi predikar Kristus som korsfäst, för judarna en stötesten och för hedningarna en dårskap. 24 Men för de kallade, både judar och greker, predikar vi Kristus som Guds kraft och Guds vishet. 25 Ty Guds dårskap är visare än människor, och Guds svaghet är starkare än människor.

*) Jesaja 29: 13 Herren har sagt: Eftersom detta folk nalkas mig med sin mun och ärar mig med sina läppar     men låter sitt hjärta vara långt ifrån mig, är fruktan för mig bara ett inlärt människobud.14 Se, därför skall jag ännu en gång göra underbara ting med detta folk, ja, underbara och förunderliga. De visas vishet skall förgå, de förståndigas förstånd skall förmörkas.15 Ve dem som går ner i djupen för att dölja sina rådslag för Herren, som bedriver sina verk i mörkret och säger: “Vem ser oss, och vem känner oss?”

Notera ovan att det inte finns någonting som säger att det inte finns något val vad gäller vår eventuella blindhet. Paulus hänvisar till Jesaja 29:14 där vi kan läsa om människor som väljer att låta sina hjärtan vara långt ifrån honom och som håller sig till människobud. Självklart sker detta emot Guds vilja. Han varnar oss från att gå den vägen. Världens vishet är en dårskap men det finns inget tvång att ty sig till världens vishet och välja fel väg.

Rom. 8 1 Så finns nu ingen fördömelse för dem som är i Kristus Jesus. —4 Så skulle lagens krav uppfyllas i oss som inte lever efter köttet utan efter Anden.5 De som lever efter sin köttsliga natur tänker på det som hör till köttet, men de som lever efter Anden tänker på det som hör till Anden. — 7 Köttets sinne är fiendskap mot Gud. Det underordnar sig inte Guds lag och kan det inte heller. 8 De som följer sin syndiga natur kan inte behaga Gud.9 Ni däremot lever inte efter köttet utan efter Anden, eftersom Guds Ande bor i er. Den som inte har Kristi Ande tillhör inte honom

Alternativen som står till buds är alltså att följa Anden eller köttet, och valet är fritt. Väljer vi att leva efter köttet blir vi andligt döda och separerade från Gud för vi lever då i fiendskap med honom och kan inte behaga honom. Vi lever ju då i synd! Om vi däremot väljer att leva efter Anden så finns ingen fördömelse för oss  – men endast då.

Joh. 15:4 Förbli i mig, så förblir jag i er. Liksom grenen inte kan bära frukt av sig själv, utan endast om den förblir i vinstocken, så kan inte heller ni det, om ni inte förblir i mig. 5 Jag är vinstocken, ni är grenarna. Om någon förblir i mig och jag i honom, bär han rik frukt, ty utan mig kan ni ingenting göra. 6 Om någon inte förblir i mig, kastas han ut som en gren och torkar bort, och man samlar ihop sådana grenar och kastar dem i elden, och de bränns upp. 7 Om ni förblir i mig och mina ord förblir i er, så be om vad ni vill, och ni skall få det. 8 Min Fader förhärligas, när ni bär rik frukt och blir mina lärjungar.9 Liksom Fadern har älskat mig, så har jag älskat er. Bli kvar i min kärlek.10 Om ni håller mina bud, förblir ni i min kärlek, liksom jag har hållit min Faders bud och förblir i hans kärlek.

Notera alla OM som står uppräknade. Vi kan inte göra någonting utan Jesus så därför är det ett listigt val att hålla sig till honom. Jesus manar oss att bli kvar i hans kärlek och det gör vi om vi håller hans bud. Han vill alltså att vi ska förbli i honom, vilket alltså inte är en självklarhet. Bär vi inte frukt så riskerar vi att huggas av vinträdet trots att vi en gång satt fast i det.

Joh. 6: 64 Men det är några bland er som inte tror.” – Jesus visste från början, vilka som inte trodde och vem det var som skulle förråda honom. – 65 Han sade vidare: “Därför har jag sagt er att ingen kan komma till mig om det inte blir honom givet av Fadern.“— 70 Jesus svarade dem: “Har jag inte själv valt ut er tolv? Och en av er är en djävul!”

Ingen kan komma till Jesus utan att det blir honom givet av Fadern, men frågan är om vi låter oss dras och frågan är om vi väljer att stanna till slutet om vi en gång tackat ja? Jesus “valde” Judas, men ändå valde Judas att förråda honom. Läs också mitt inlägg om Joh. 6 här.

Ef. 2:2 1 Också er har Gud gjort levande, ni som var döda genom era överträdelser och synder. 2 Tidigare levde ni i dem på den här världens vis och följde härskaren över luftens välde, den ande som nu är verksam i olydnadens söner. 3 Bland dem var vi alla en gång, när vi följde våra syndiga begär och gjorde vad köttet och sinnet ville. Av naturen var vi vredens barn, vi liksom de andra.4 Men Gud som är rik på barmhärtighet har älskat oss med så stor kärlek,5 också när vi ännu var döda genom våra överträdelser, att han har gjort oss levande tillsammans med Kristus. Av nåd är ni frälsta. —8 Ty av nåden är ni frälsta genom tron, inte av er själva, Guds gåva är det, 9 inte på grund av gärningar, för att ingen skall berömma sig. 10 Ty hans verk är vi, skapade i Kristus Jesus till goda gärningar, som Gud har förberett, så att vi skall vandra i dem.

Vi är andligt döda när vi syndar och det är återigen ett dåligt alternativ att synda. Att synd separerar oss från Gud är en sanning i både gamla och nya testamentet. Paulus förklarar hur människor kan välja att leva på världens vis genom att följa Satan och på det viset bli olydnadens söner. Då kan våra hjärtan bli förhärdade och det blir fullständigt naturligt för oss att synda och att leva i mörkret. Paulus menar också att vi kan bli levande genom Jesus Kristus. Vi är frälsta av NÅD (inte av oss själva) och vi är skapade för att vandra i goda gärningar, men frågan är dock hur lydiga vi väljer att vara? Vi riskerar alltid att huggas av vinträdet om vi inte bär god frukt.

When should we rebuke and when should we show meekness and gentleness?

Jesus rarely used strong words 

There are only a few occasions in the Bible where we can see Jesus using some “strong words” and where he called people “names”, but unfortunately these rare occasions are often used by christians to justify their own usage of strong wordings and bad names whenever they feel like using them and regardless of circumstances.   What about all other cases where Jesus did not use such strong words and simply corrected people with gentleness? If we are supposed to throw insults around us when preaching and call people names, then it’s odd that the Bible doesn’t seem to encourage this kind of behavior, and Jesus himself didn’t act that way. Maybe it’s just ONE particular sermon (Matt. 23:13-33) which people use to support their own sometimes harsh behavior when evangelizing. 

Once Jesus did turn over of the money changers’ table but this is only one example (and an unusual one) where Jesus took severe actions, and he had good reasons to be upset when these people turned the temple of God into a house of merchandise (den of thieves).  Jesus had the right to cleanse his own Father’s house.  We are never told to act in a similar way. We are not told to enter a church and grab a christmas tree we might find there and throw it out while shouting that the entire church must repent. If we would like people to LISTEN to us and IMPROVE, there are likely better ways to handle such situations.  It’s a risk that our gospel causes a stir even if we are nothing but polite and respectful, so to make matters worse by being insulting or loud doesn’t make much sense. We would risk to find closed doors instead of open doors, when we try to reach people.

It’s true that Jesus called certain scribes and pharisees (and lawyers as per the gospel of Luke) for “hypocrites” and “fools and blind”, but he made sure to explain why he felt they were so both they and other listeners would understand the reasoning and the risks involved, and so they would LEARN something. There are lots of negative things we could call a person and we wouldn’t necessarily be unbiblical by doing so, like calling someone greedy, slanderous, lazy, argumentative, proud, dishonest, etc but we would be in error if we used these adjectives without legitimate reasons and without explaining WHY. It’s not always clever to put words on what we THINK about a person – or to blurt out “you jerk” – because it wouldn’t result in anything beneficial for anyone. The idea is to make people LISTEN and not to make them so upset that they leave and miss out on important information that you might have for them.

We are told to treat others the way we would like to be treated ourselves, and if we are to be criticized personally (not in groups) we would likely prefer to be corrected privately and by close friends and in LOVE. At other times rebuke is more appropriate, but that usually concerns repeated offences and/or pastors/teachers who have committed serious sins and must be openly rebuked. Jesus of course knew exactly when to correct people in meekness and when to rebuke, but it’s clear that many of us miss the mark. With common love and respect we can get far. See below that Jesus made sure to explain the reasoning behind naming the scribes and the pharisees “hypocrites” (I left out some verses) so that all involved could LEARN and UNDERSTAND.

Matt. 23:13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.—17 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?.19 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?20 And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon–27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.—33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?34 Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city

John the Baptiste was the first one who used the term “generation of vipers” but also John explained what he meant with this description, and so did Jesus who used the same term. Dishing out insults without providing explanations is very distant for holy men.

Matthew 3:7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

Matt. 12:33 Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit.34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.38 Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee.39 But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas

In another situation Jesus did not choose to say “woe to you pharisees” but gently explained to a pharisee named Simon what was wrong with his attitude. He corrected him in love without using name callings, but also without compromising. Jesus also called Herod a “fox”, and this fact is sometimes used by christians to justify all kinds of humiliating names for others. 

Luke 7:36 And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to meat.37 —39 Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.40 And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Master, say on.41 There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.42 And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?43 Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.44 And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.45 Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet.46 My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.47 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.

Luke 13:31 The same day there came certain of the Pharisees, saying unto him, Get thee out, and depart hence: for Herod will kill thee.32 And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.

Also Paul ended up in many situations where he could rebuke people but still chose not to. He also warned against vain discussions, but at times discussions are profitable and Paul himself spent a good deal of his time doing so in order to convert people. We can read that he reasoned with people and disputed with them.

Acts 17:2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,3 Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.4 And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.

Acts 17:16Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.  17Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.

Acts 19:8And he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God. 9But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus. 10And this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.

Acts. 20:.29 For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.30 Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.31 Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.

Acts. 28:23 And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening. 24 And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not.

On March Hill in Athens Paul could have rebuked all those people who believed in false gods, but he used a different approach. He didn’t shout “Repent, all you wicked sinners” nor told them that they were a bunch of heretical idolaters who were on the way to HELL. He managed to get their attention without humiliating them, and he just informed them that they were too superstitious and then he proceeded to explain why they were off the mark. He was smart enough to start off his talk by linking their worship of false gods to the real God. In that way he did not stir up anger or caused hurt feelings but made people listen. Naturally Paul did not compromise with the truth, nor was he watering down the gospel. It’s equally important to explain to people that they are in a lost condition due to their sins, as well as telling them how they can get saved.

Acts 17:23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, To The Unknown God. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

The Bible says it’s the one who spreads  heretical views who is the one causing a division

If you’re in a group of  “christian heretics” and you try to correct them and exhort them, then YOU are not the one sinning by “causing a division” because the division has already happened. (But of course you are responsible for correcting people wisely, if you feel a correction is needed.) As soon as christians start to teach things which are contrary to the Bible, there is a risk for divisions and if the result is that the majority start to side with a certain heretical view then they might feel that a person who opposes them is the one being a trouble maker and who causes a division among them just because they themselves are in the majority and because they are not the ones correcting/rebuking anyone. But it’s always the one who promotes falsehood (against the Bible) who is the one causing a division or strife, even if he/she happens to be supported by an entire church or a large scope of churches.

It’s not always wise to keep quiet in order to be friendly and to avoid causing a division. Sometimes it’s unbiblical to NOT correct others – and even rebuke when necessary.  We are responsible for not letting dangerous teachings spread among us. If we don’t react, there is a risk for that even more people will be deceived by false teachings and this could lead to LOST SOULS and we might get blood on our hands.  It’s not loving to tell a person that all is well with his soul when it isn’t. It’s likewise unwise to rebuke people when the situation doesn’t call for it.  We just have to pray to the Lord that we get wisdom about this so we won’t hurt people or make them feel that we are condescending towards them.

GENTLENESS and MEEK CORRECTIONS IN LOVE

Matthew 18:15Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. 16But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. 17And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.

Luke 6:26 Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.27 But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you,28 Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.

1 Tim. 6:11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.

REBUKING and CORRECTION in The New Testament

Luke 12:51 Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division.

Luke 17:3-5 Be on your guard! If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. And if he sins against you seven times a day, and returns to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ forgive him.

Acts 20:28 Therefore take heed to yourselves and the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God, which He purchased with His own blood. For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Also from AMONG YOURSELVES men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to DRAW AWAY THE DISCIPLES after themselves.–31Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.

REBUKING and CORRECTION in The Old Testament

2 Chronicles 19:10 ye shall even warn them that they trespass not against the LORD, and so wrath come upon you, and upon your brethren: this do, and ye shall not trespass.

Malachi 2:17 Ye have wearied the LORD with your words. Yet ye say, Wherein have we wearied him? When ye say, Every one that doeth evil is good in the sight of the LORD, and he delighteth in them; or, Where is the God of judgment?

Ezekiel 13:22 Because with lies ye have strengthened the hands of the wicked, that he should not return from his wicked way, by promising him life.

Ezekiel 3:20 Again, When a RIGHTEOUS man doth turn from his righteousness, and commit iniquity, and I lay a stumbling-block before him, he shall die: because thou hast NOT GIVEN HIM WARNING, he shall DIE IN HIS SIN, and his righteousness which he hath done shall not be remembered; but his blood will I require at THINE HAND. Proverbs 9:8 Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.

Eyes that should not see and ears that should not hear Romans 11:8

According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear (Rom. 11:8)

God does not arbitrarily cause certain unfortunate people to be spiritually blind and deaf and neither does he turn around and punish them for not seeking him – which he prevented them to do in the first place. However, if PEOPLE reject him and rebel against him, he can give them over to a reprobate mind. IF God would be the one to  make people spiritually blind and deaf (for no reason at all), it must mean that they were NOT blind and deaf from the start – despite that they were adults and had been around for a while. (Something for reformed thinkers to think about, because they believe we were all blind and deaf before we are regenerated and able to believe and do good.)

When we check the passages in the Bible where we can read about God giving people over to blindness and deafness, we can see that this is their own fault due to hardening of their own hearts. We can also see that God EXPECTED Israel to see and hear due to the many miracles that he did before them, and he always has great anger towards people who refuse to give up their idols and other sins. In Romans 11:7-11 Paul is referring to Isaiah, so it’s essential that we study the context in Isaiah to understand why people’s eyes and ears have been shut.

Rom 11:7 What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded. 8(According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day.9And David saith, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumbling block, and a recompence unto them: 10Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back alway. 11I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy.

Isaiah 29:9 Stay yourselves, and wonder; cry ye out, and cry: they are drunken, but not with wine; they stagger, but not with strong drink.10 For the Lord hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed your eyes: the prophets and your rulers, the seers hath he covered.11 And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I cannot; for it is sealed:12 And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I am not learned.13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:14 Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.15 Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the Lord, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us?

Isaiah 44:9They that make a graven image are all of them vanity; and their delectable things shall not profit; and they are their own witnesses; they see not, nor know; that they may be ashamed.—17And the residue thereof  he maketh a god, even his graven image: he falleth down unto it, and worshippeth it, and prayeth unto it, and saith, Deliver me; for thou art my god.18They have not known nor understood: for he hath shut their eyes, that they cannot see; and their hearts, that they cannot understand.  19 And none considereth in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire; yea, also I have baked bread upon the coals thereof; I have roasted flesh, and eaten it: and shall I make the residue thereof an abomination? shall I fall down to the stock of a tree?20 He feedeth on ashes: a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?

Ps. 69:22 Let their table become a snare before them: and that which should have been for their welfare, let it become a trap.23 Let their eyes be darkened, that they see not; and make their loins continually to shake.24 Pour out thine indignation upon them, and let thy wrathful anger take hold of them.

Jesus encourages us to walk in the light, LEST darkness will come upon us. and IF we choose to believe in the light, we can become children of light. Despite that Jesus did many miracles, the pharisees still did not believe in him and that is because they had purposed in their hearts to not come to the light. A person who hates the light remains in darkness, and he is spiritually blind.

John 12:35 Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.36 While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.37 But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him:38 That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?39 Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again,40 He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.

John. 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

John. 12:38 is a quote from this passage in the old testament:

Jesaja 6:9 And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.10 Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.11 Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate,12 And the Lord have removed men far away, and there be a great forsaking in the midst of the land.

Compare with this passage where we can see that Paul is blaming people for not being able to see or hear. Paul did his utmost to persuade people to believe in Jesus, but if God is the one to make people spiritually blind and death, Paul would be wasting his time:

 Acts 28:23 And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.24 And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not.25And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers, 26Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive: 27For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have THEY closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. 28Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it.

Other verses in the same chapter (John 12) show man’s free will and responsibility to seek and come to God. Clearly God would not predestine people to NOT believe in him, follow him, confess him, receive him, abide in him, etc. God would not close the door for people, only to ask the same people why they have not seeked him. We can see that there is an option to reject Jesus, and that is of course against God’s will.

John 12:25 He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.26 If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.—42 Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue:43 For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.-—46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.—-48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

Below we can read about people who forsake God and who have eyes that don’t see and ears that don’t hear, and they are considered foolish by God. Naturally he wouldn’t create people to revolt against him and to have rebellious hearts. We can read that it’s their INIQUITIES which have caused themselves to be withheld from the good things of God:

Jer 5:19And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say, Wherefore doeth the LORD our God all these things unto us? then shalt thou answer them, Like as ye have forsaken me, and served strange gods in your land, so shall ye serve strangers in a land that is not your’s. 20Declare this in the house of Jacob, and publish it in Judah, saying, 21Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not: —23But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone. 24Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the LORD our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest. 25Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good things from you. 26For among my people are found wicked men: they lay wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men. 27As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxen rich. 28They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge. 29Shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this? 30A wonderful and horrible thing is committed in the land; 31The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?

Other verses which show that people have eyes that do not see and ears that do not hear – due to their own doingsöga2

Hes. 12:2 Son of man, thou dwellest in the midst of a rebellious house, which have eyes to see, and see not; they have ears to hear, and hear not: for they are a rebellious house. 3Therefore, thou son of man, prepare thee stuff for removing, and remove by day in their sight; and thou shalt remove from thy place to another place in their sight: it may be they will consider, though they be a rebellious house.

Zechariah 7:10 And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart.11 But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear.12 Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the Lord of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the Lord of hosts.13 Therefore it is come to pass, that as he cried, and they would not hear; so they cried, and I would not hear, saith the Lord of hosts:

Ps 135:15 The idols of the heathen are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands. 16They have mouths, but they speak not; eyes have they, but they see not; 17They have ears, but they hear not; neither is there any breath in their mouths. 18They that make them are like unto them: so is every one that trusteth in them.

Deut.29:2And Moses called unto all Israel, and said unto them, Ye have seen all that the LORD did before your eyes in the land of Egypt unto Pharaoh, and unto all his servants, and unto all his land; 3The great temptations which thine eyes have seen,the signs, and those great miracles: 4Yet the LORD hath not given you an heart to perceive, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, unto this day.-–20 The LORD will not spare him, but then the anger of the LORD and his jealousy shall smoke against that man, and all the curses that are written in this book shall lie upon him, and the LORD shall blot out his name from under heaven.— 24Even all nations shall say, Wherefore hath the LORD done thus unto this land? what meaneth the heat of thisgreat anger? 25Then men shall say, Because they have forsaken the covenant of the LORD God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them forth out of the land of Egypt: 26For they went and served other gods, and worshipped them, gods whom they knew not, and whom he had not given unto them:

Mark 8:17And when Jesus knew it, he saith unto them, Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet hardened? 18Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember? 19When I brake the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? They say unto him, Twelve.

Verses that show that people can and should seek God in order to find him and get life

Jeremiah 29:13 And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

Isaiah 55:6 Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

1 Chronicles 28:9 And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the Lord searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.

2 Chronicles 15:2 And he went out to meet Asa, and said unto him, Hear ye me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin; The Lord is with you, while ye be with him; and if ye seek him, he will be found of you; but if ye forsake him, he will forsake you.

Romans 10:16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.18 But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world.19 But I say, Did not Israel know? First Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you.20 But Esaias is very bold, and saith, I was found of them that sought me not; I was made manifest unto them that asked not after me.21 But to Israel he saith, All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.

Isaiah 65:1 I am sought of them that asked not for me; I am found of them that sought me not: I said, Behold me, behold me, unto a nation that was not called by my name.2 I have spread out my hands all the day unto a rebellious people, which walketh in a way that was not good, after their own thoughts;3 A people that provoketh me to anger continually to my face; that sacrificeth in gardens, and burneth incense upon altars of brick

Isaiah 45:19 I have not spoken in secret, in a dark place of the earth: I said not unto the seed of Jacob, Seek ye me in vain: I the Lord speak righteousness, I declare things that are right.

It doesn’t say anywhere that God randomly selects people who he will cause to not see or hear. The reason why the farisees did not see or hear is that they chose not to follow Jesus to listen to his teaching and to get edified. Instead they came to him in order to mock him and/or find faults – if they even came to him at all. If people were chosen to be elect/non-elect before the world began, then of course Jesus wouldn’t have to speak in parables in order to hide his message, because the non-elect would be blind and deaf regardless.

Luke 8:10 — Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand

Jesus warns his disciples in the same chapter that they must HEAR in the right way and also DO it, which shows there is a risk they won’t.

Luke 8:18Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have. —21And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.

The Bible doesn’t anywhere that we first must be “regenerated” before we can seek God. God calls us and we must respond, and if we do come to him we must believe that he is, and if we are willing to get to know him we will be revealed the DEEP things of God.

Hebr. 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God MUST BELIEVE THAT HE IS, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently SEEK him.

1 Corinthians 2:10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the DEEP things of God

Romans 1

There is no better passage than Romans 1:18-32 to show the reality of when people reject God even though they know better and have the opportunity to seek him and find him. For this reason God gives them over to reprobation.

Romans 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
