Hur ser det ut i den nya HIMLEN enligt Bibeln – i det nya Jerusalem?

Om Adam och Eva fortsatt att leva rättfärdigt, i enlighet med Guds vilja, så hade de kunnat leva i evighet i Edens lustgård. De var dock tvungna att lämna lustgården för att på så sätt hindras att nå livets träd och så leva för evigt – i en värld som plötsligt var påverkad av synd och bedrövelse. Att leva i evighet i en syndfull värld är inte optimalt (snarare något fruktansvärt) men Gud lät sin ende son dö för oss för att vi ska kunna få evigt liv – dock inte i den här världen. Syndens lön är döden, men Guds gåva är evigt liv i Kristus Jesus, vår Herre (Rom. 6:23).

Hur ser himmelriket ut? Vi får en del tips från Bibeln.

1 Kor. 2:9 Men vi känner, som Skriften säger, vad ögat inte har sett och örat inte hört och människohjärtat inte kunnat ana, vad Gud har berett åt dem som älskar honom.

Joh. 14:2 I min Faders hus finns många rum. Om det inte vore så, skulle jag då ha sagt er att jag går bort för att bereda plats åt er?

Paulus var nära döden under hans första missionsresa i Lystra, och det kan mycket väl vara så att han refererar till den händelsen i sitt andra brev till korinthierna 14 år efteråt. Om den första himlen är det område där fåglarna befinner sig (atmosfären som kan delas in i flera olika sfärer) och den andra himlen är området ovanför det (rymden), så kan man tänka sig ytterligare en himladimension som kallas “den tredje himlen” – paradiset. Paulus verkar sakna ord för hur det är i Paradiset och hur våra sinnen kommer att uppfatta det vi hör och ser:

Apg 14:19 Från Antiokia och Ikonium kom det nu några judar. De lyckades få med sig folket, och man stenade Paulus och släpade ut honom ur staden i tron att han var död. 20 Men när lärjungarna samlades omkring honom, reste han sig och gick in i staden.

2 Kor. 12:1 Jag måste berömma mig, om än till ingen nytta, och jag kommer då till syner och uppenbarelser från Herren. 2 Jag vet om en man i Kristus som för fjorton år sedan blev uppryckt ända till tredje himlen – om han var i kroppen eller utanför kroppen vet jag inte, Gud vet det. – 3 Jag vet att den mannen – om han var i kroppen eller utanför kroppen vet jag inte, Gud vet det – 4 att han blev uppryckt till paradiset och hörde ord som ingen människa kan uttala eller får uttala.5 Av den mannen vill jag berömma mig, men av mig själv vill jag inte berömma mig utom av min svaghet.—¹⁰Så gläder jag mig över svaghet, misshandel och nöd, över förföljelser och ångest, eftersom det sker för Kristus. Ty när jag är svag, då är jag stark.

5 Mos. 4:39 Därför skall du i dag veta och lägga på hjärtat att Herren är Gud uppe i himlen och nere på jorden: Det finns ingen annan.

Fil. 1:21 Ty för mig är livet Kristus och döden en vinst. 22 Men om livet här på jorden innebär att mitt arbete bär frukt, då vet jag inte vad jag skall välja. 23 Jag dras åt båda hållen. Jag skulle vilja bryta upp och vara hos Kristus, det vore mycket bättre. 24 Men för er skull är det nödvändigt att jag får leva kvar.

För att få komma till paradiset måste vi först dö och få en andlig kropp. Det kommer att finnas skillnader i “glans” gällande de uppståndna:

1 Kor. 15:35 Nu kan någon fråga: Hur uppstår de döda? Vad för slags kropp har de när de kommer? 36 Du oförståndige! Vad du sår får inte liv om det inte dör. 37 Och vad du sår har inte den gestalt som skall bli till, utan är ett naket korn, kanske av vete eller av något annat slag. 38 Men Gud ger det en sådan gestalt som han har velat, och åt varje frö dess egen gestalt. 39 Inte allt kött är av samma slag. Det är skillnad mellan människors, husdjurs, fåglars och fiskars kött. 40 Det finns också himmelska kroppar och jordiska kroppar. Men de himmelska kropparnas glans är av ett slag, de jordiska kropparnas glans av ett annat slag. 41 Solen har sin glans, månen en annan och stjärnorna ännu en annan. Den ena stjärnan skiljer sig från den andra i glans.42 Så är det också med de dödas uppståndelse. Det som sås förgängligt uppstår oförgängligt.43 Det som sås i vanära uppstår i härlighet. Det som sås i svaghet uppstår i kraft. 44 Det sås en jordisk kropp, det uppstår en andlig kropp. Om det finns en jordisk kropp, finns det också en andlig kropp. 45 Så står det skrivet: Den första människan, Adam, blev en levande varelse. Den siste Adam blev en livgivande ande. 46 Men det andliga är inte det första utan det jordiska. Därefter kommer det andliga. 47 Den första människan var av jord, jordisk. Den andra människan kom från himlen. 48 Som den jordiska människan var, så är också de jordiska. Och som den himmelska människan är, så är också de himmelska. 49 Och liksom vi har burit den jordiska människans bild, skall vi också bära den himmelska människans bild.50 Men det säger jag er, bröder, att kött och blod inte kan ärva Guds rike. Inte heller ärver det förgängliga det oförgängliga. 51 Se, jag säger er en hemlighet: Vi skall inte alla insomna, men vi skall alla förvandlas, 52 i ett nu, på ett ögonblick, vid den sista basunens ljud. Ty basunen skall ljuda och de döda skall uppstå odödliga, och vi skall förvandlas. 53 Ty detta förgängliga måste kläs i oförgänglighet och detta dödliga kläs i odödlighet. 54 Men när detta förgängliga har klätts i oförgänglighet och detta dödliga klätts i odödlighet, då skall det ord fullbordas som står skrivet: Döden är uppslukad och segern vunnen.

Matt. 22:30 Ty vid uppståndelsen gifter man sig inte och blir inte bortgift, utan man är som änglarna i himlen.

Livet på jorden kan verka full av umbäranden, speciellt för en del människor, men då får vi tänka på att den här tidens lidanden väger lätt i jämförelse med vad som väntar. En blivande mamma anser ofta att en plågsam förlossning ändå är värt besväret för det som hon vet kommer efteråt – ett barn! Ändå varar vare sig mamman eller barnet i evighet utan som högst kan vi förvänta oss ca 100 år på jorden. Många väljer att gå igenom flera års studier trots uppoffranden och behov av studielån för att kunna få ett bra arbete och därmed leva ett bättre liv när snålåren till slut är till ända. Temporär vedermöda anses vara värt besväret i längden om målet för vår strävan kan uppnås. Ett temporärt jordeliv är som ett kortvarigt morgondagg i jämförelse med evigheten i Paradiset:

Rom. 8:18 Jag hävdar att den här tidens lidanden väger lätt i jämförelse med den härlighet som kommer att uppenbaras och bli vår. 19 Ty skapelsen väntar ivrigt på att Guds barn skall uppenbaras.

1 Pet. 1:3 Välsignad är vår Herre Jesu Kristi Gud och Fader. I sin stora barmhärtighet har han genom Jesu Kristi uppståndelse från de döda fött oss på nytt till ett levande hopp, 4 till ett arv som aldrig kan förstöras, fläckas eller vissna och som är förvarat åt er i himlen. 5 Med Guds makt blir ni genom tron bevarade till den frälsning som finns beredd och skall uppenbaras i den sista tiden.6 Gläd er därför, om ni nu en kort tid måste utstå prövningar av olika slag. 7 Äktheten i er tro är långt värdefullare än guld som är förgängligt, fastän det håller provet i eld, och den tron skall visa sig bli till lov, pris och ära, när Jesus Kristus uppenbarar sig. 8 Honom älskar ni utan att ha sett honom, och fastän ni ännu inte ser honom, tror ni på honom och jublar över honom i obeskrivlig, himmelsk glädje, 9 då ni nu är på väg att vinna målet för er tro, era själars frälsning.— 24 Ty allt kött är som gräset och all dess härlighet som blomman i gräset. Gräset vissnar bort och blomman faller av,25 men Herrens ord förblir i evighet.

Matt. 13:43 Då skall de rättfärdiga lysa som solen, i sin Faders rike. Hör, du som har öron att höra med!

Rövaren på korset fick som bekant träda in i paradiset direkt efter sin död ihop med Jesus:

Luk. 23:39 En av brottslingarna som var upphängda där skymfade honom och sade: “Är inte du Messias? Hjälp då dig själv och oss!” —42 Och han sade: “Jesus, tänk på mig, när du kommer till ditt rike.” 43 Jesus svarade: “Amen säger jag dig: I dag skall du vara med mig i paradiset.“

Gud kommer att döma oss efter våra samveten (Rom. 2), och en del människor verkar ha lättare att söka Gud om de går igenom en del umbäranden. T ex om man är fattig i anden, sörjer, blir hånad, förföljd eller förtalad för Jesu skull. Ett komfortabelt liv kan ibland leda till att man inte anser sig ha ett behov av Gud. Det är ett vinnande koncept att vara ödmjuk, barmhärtig, renhjärtad, hungra/törsta efter rättfärdighet samt skapa frid:

Matt. 5:3 Saliga är de som är fattiga i anden, dem tillhör himmelriket.4 Saliga är de som sörjer, de skall bli tröstade.5 Saliga är de ödmjuka, de skall ärva jorden.6 Saliga är de som hungrar och törstar efter rättfärdighet, de skall bli mättade.7 Saliga är de barmhärtiga, de skall få barmhärtighet.8 Saliga är de renhjärtade, de skall se Gud.9 Saliga är de som skapar frid, de skall kallas Guds barn.10 Saliga är de som blir förföljda för rättfärdighetens skull, dem tillhör himmelriket.11 Saliga är ni, när människor hånar och förföljer er, ljuger och säger allt ont om er för min skull. 12 Gläd er och jubla, ty er lön är stor i himlen. På samma sätt förföljde man profeterna före er.

Luk. 16:25 Men Abraham svarade: Mitt barn, kom ihåg att du fick ut ditt goda medan du levde, under det att Lasarus fick ut det onda. Nu får han tröst och du plåga.

I Jesaja kan vi läsa om telningen från Isais rot som ska döma allt folk med rättfärdighet. Det verka alltså handla om den sista tiden och fridsriket. Djur och människor lever tillsammas i fullständig harmoni:

Jes. 11:3 Han skall ha sin glädje i Herrens fruktan. Han skall inte döma efter vad ögonen ser eller utöva lag efter vad öronen hör,4 utan med rättfärdighet skall han döma de fattiga, med rättvisa skaffa rätt åt de ödmjuka på jorden. Han skall slå jorden med sin muns stav, med sina läppars andedräkt döda de ogudaktiga.5 Rättfärdighet skall vara bältet runt hans midja, trofasthet bältet om hans höfter.6 Vargar skall bo tillsammans med lamm, leoparder ligga bland killingar. Kalvar och unga lejon och gödboskap skall vara tillsammans, och en liten pojke skall valla dem.7 Kor och björnar skall gå och beta, deras ungar skall ligga tillsammans, och lejon skall äta halm som oxar.8 Ett spädbarn skall leka vid huggormens hål, ett avvant barn räcka ut handen mot giftormens öga.9 Ingen skall göra något ont eller förstöra något på hela mitt heliga berg, ty landet skall vara fullt av Herrens kunskap, liksom vattnet täcker havet.

Det är i Bibelns sista bok Uppenbarelseboken som vi kan se flest detaljer om den nya himlen och det nya Jerusalem. Upp. 7 talar om de människor som klarat sig från den stora nöden/vedermödan och som tvättat sina kläder i Lammets blod:

Upp. 7:9 Därefter såg jag, och se: en stor skara som ingen kunde räkna, av alla folkslag och stammar och länder och språk. De stod inför tronen och inför Lammet, klädda i vita kläder och med palmblad i händerna. — 14 Jag svarade: “Min herre, du vet det.” Då sade han till mig: “Dessa är de som kommer ur den stora nöden, och de har tvättat sina kläder och gjort dem vita i Lammets blod.15 Därför står de inför Guds tron och tjänar honom dag och natt i hans tempel, och han som sitter på tronen skall slå upp sitt tabernakel över dem. 16 De skall aldrig mer hungra eller törsta, inte heller skall solen eller någon annan hetta träffa dem. 17 Ty Lammet som står mitt för tronen skall vara deras herde och leda dem till livets vattenkällor, och Gud skall torka bort alla tårar från deras ögon.”

Den första himlen och den första jorden ska försvinna, och en ny himmel och jord ska komma. Det nya Jerusalem ska kommer ner från himlen. Återigen kommer Gud själv, precis som i Adam och Evas dagar, bo mitt bland folket:

Upp 21:1 Och jag såg en ny himmel och en ny jord. Ty den första himlen och den första jorden hade försvunnit, och havet fanns inte mer. 2 Och jag såg den heliga staden, det nya Jerusalem, komma ner från himlen, från Gud, redo som en brud, som är smyckad för sin brudgum. 3 Och jag hörde en stark röst från tronen säga: “Se, nu står Guds tabernakel bland människorna, och han skall bo hos dem och de skall vara hans folk, och Gud själv skall vara hos dem. 4 Och han skall torka alla tårar från deras ögon. Döden skall inte finnas mer och ingen sorg och ingen gråt och ingen plåga. Ty det som förr var är borta.”5 Han som satt på tronen sade: “Se, jag gör allting nytt.” Och han sade: “Skriv, ty dessa ord är trovärdiga och sanna.” 6 Han sade också till mig: “Det har skett. Jag är A och O, begynnelsen och änden. Åt den som törstar skall jag ge att dricka fritt och för intet ur källan med livets vatten. 7 Den som segrar skall få detta i arv, och jag skall vara hans Gud, och han skall vara min son. 8 Men de fega, de otroende och de skändliga, mördarna, de otuktiga, trollkarlarna, avgudadyrkarna och alla lögnare skall få sin del i sjön som brinner av eld och svavel. Detta är den andra döden.”9 En av de sju änglarna med de sju skålarna, som var fyllda med de sju sista plågorna, kom och talade till mig och sade: “Kom, jag skall visa dig bruden, Lammets hustru.” 10 Och han förde mig i anden upp på ett stort och högt berg och visade mig den heliga staden Jerusalem, som kom ner från himlen, från Gud, 11 och som ägde Guds härlighet. Dess strålglans var som den dyrbaraste ädelsten, som en kristallklar jaspis. 12 Staden hade en stor och hög mur med tolv portar och över portarna tolv änglar och namn inskrivna: namnen på Israels barns tolv stammar. 13 I öster fanns tre portar, i norr tre portar, i söder tre portar och i väster tre portar.14 Stadsmuren hade tolv grundstenar, och på dem stod tolv namn, namnen på Lammets tolv apostlar.15 Och han som talade till mig hade en mätstång av guld för att mäta staden och dess portar och dess mur. 16 Staden bildade en fyrkant och var lika lång som den var bred. Och han mätte upp den med mätstången till tolv tusen stadier. Dess längd, bredd och höjd var lika. 17 Han mätte också upp dess mur till etthundrafyrtiofyra alnar efter människors mått, som också är änglars. 18 Muren var byggd av jaspis, och staden bestod av rent guld som liknade rent glas.19 Grundstenarna till stadsmuren var prydda med alla slags ädelstenar. Den första var en jaspis, den andra en safir, den tredje en kalcedon, den fjärde en smaragd, 20 den femte en sardonyx, den sjätte en karneol, den sjunde en krysolit, den åttonde en beryll, den nionde en topas, den tionde en krysopras, den elfte en hyacint och den tolfte en ametist. 21 De tolv portarna bestod av tolv pärlor, och varje särskild port var en enda pärla. Och stadens gata var av rent guld som genomskinligt glas.22 Något tempel såg jag inte i staden, ty Herren Gud, den Allsmäktige, och Lammet är dess tempel. 23 Staden behöver inte ljus från sol eller måne, ty Guds härlighet lyser upp den, och dess ljus är Lammet. 24 Och folken skall vandra i dess ljus, och jordens kungar skall föra in sin härlighet i den. 25 Stadens portar skall aldrig stängas om dagen – natt skall inte finnas där –26 och folkens härlighet och ära skall föras in i staden. 27 Aldrig någonsin skall något orent komma in i den, och inte heller någon som handlar skändligt och lögnaktigt, utan endast de som är skrivna i livets bok som tillhör Lammet.

Livets träd kommer att få en särskilt plats i Guds rike och den ger frukt varje månad. Trädets blad ger läkedom åt folket, som aldrig kommer att dö. Det kommer inte att finnas någon natt och inte ens någon sol – eftersom Gud kommer att lysa på invånarna.

Upp. 22:1 Och han visade mig en flod med livets vatten, klar som kristall. Den går ut från Guds och Lammets tron. 2 Mitt på stadens gata, på båda sidor om floden, står livets träd som bär frukt tolv gånger, varje månad bär det frukt, och trädets blad ger läkedom åt folken. 3 Och ingen förbannelse skall finnas mer. Guds och Lammets tron skall stå i staden, och hans tjänare skall tjäna honom. 4 De skall se hans ansikte, och hans namn skall stå skrivet på deras pannor.5 Någon natt skall inte finnas mer, och de behöver inte någon lampas sken eller solens ljus. Ty Herren Gud skall lysa över dem, och de skall regera som kungar i evigheternas evigheter.6 Och han sade till mig: “Dessa ord är trovärdiga och sanna, och Herren, profeternas andars Gud, har sänt sin ängel för att visa sina tjänare vad som snart måste ske.”—10 Och han sade till mig: “Försegla inte profetians ord i denna bok. Ty tiden är nära. 11 Den orättfärdige må fortsätta att göra orätt, den orene att orena sig, den rättfärdige må fortsätta att göra vad som är rätt och den helige att helga sig.“12 “Se, jag kommer snart och har min lön med mig för att ge var och en efter hans gärningar.13 Jag är A och O, den förste och den siste, begynnelsen och änden. 14 Saliga är de som tvättar sina kläder. De skall få rätt till livets träd och få komma in i staden genom dess portar. 15 Men utanför är hundarna och trollkarlarna, de otuktiga och mördarna, avgudadyrkarna och alla som älskar lögn och far med osanning.

Jesus Christ is the chief CORNER-STONE worshiped by angels

Our lives should be built on the foundation of Jesus Christ – the chief corner-stone and the ROCK

The son of God decided to be born as man on earth and die for all mankind as God in flesh. For a brief time Jesus was made lower than the angels – the same angels who would later worship him as God according to Heb. 1. We can read in Heb. 2 that Jesus was made “a little lower than the angels”, and in the previous chapter we can read that he was “so much better than the angels” and that he “obtained a much excellent name than they”. This is not a contradiction since Jesus is also fully capable of placing himself in a free will temporary subjection to his own Father, with whom he shared the glory from eternity past (John 17:5).

John 10:18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of MYSELF. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.

Heb. 2:5 For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection the world to come, whereof we speak.6 But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man that thou visitest him?7 Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands:8 Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him.9 But we see Jesus, WHO WAS MADE A LITTLE LOWER THAN THE ANGELS for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

Heb. 1:3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high:4 Being made SO MUCH BETTER THAN THE ANGELS, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.5 For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?6 And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And LET ALL THE ANGELS OF GOD WORSHIP HIM.7 And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire.8 But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.

Phil. 2:⁶Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:⁷But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:⁸And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.⁹Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:¹⁰That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;¹¹And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Jesus is the most important stone in the building

The Old Testament contains numerous prophesies about the Messiah – Jesus Christ. He is also called the chief corner-stone, and that is a stone which is considered to be the most important part of a stone building since it is carrying the weight of the stones built on top of it while there are no stones UNDER it. Since Jesus Christ is the foundation of our salvation, it is important that we spread this information to the rest of the world to encourage people to seek the true Savior and thus be saved. People might be convinced of that they are on the right path to eternal salvation, but if they are not choosing to build their lives on the corner-stone, they are still off track. It is vital to identify this corner-stone. God does not share his glory with anyone, but shares it with Jesus. This means that Jesus must be God.

Proverbs 14:12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

Is. 48:11 For mine own sake, even for mine own sake, will I do it: for how should my name be polluted? and I will not give my glory unto another.

Jesus Christ came from the tribe of Judah. Corner-stone below is a translation from the Hebrew word eben (Strong’s 68)

Isa. 28:2 Behold, the Lord hath a mighty and strong one, which as a tempest of hail and a destroying storm, as a flood of mighty waters overflowing, shall cast down to the earth with the hand.—16 Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.

Zechariah 10:2 For the idols have spoken vanity, and the diviners have seen a lie, and have told false dreams; they comfort in vain: therefore they went their way as a flock, they were troubled, because there was no shepherd.3 Mine anger was kindled against the shepherds, and I punished the goats: for the Lord of hosts hath visited his flock the house of Judah, and hath made them as his goodly horse in the battle.4 Out of him came forth the corner, out of him the nail, out of him the battle bow, out of him every oppressor together

Unfortunately people are refusing to accept this head stone of the corner despite that it is the most important building block! We can see this statement in Ps. 118:20, and we can also read about the gate of the Lord and “Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the Lord”, which is quoted in Matt. 21 – when Jesus entered Jerusalem and people were cheering their Hosianna.

Ps. 118:15 The voice of rejoicing and salvation is in the tabernacles of the righteous: the right hand of the Lord doeth valiantly.16 The right hand of the Lord is exalted: the right hand of the Lord doeth valiantly.“—20 This gate of the Lord, into which the righteous shall enter.21 I will praise thee: for thou hast heard me, and art become my salvation.22 The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.—26 Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the Lord: we have blessed you out of the house of the Lord.27 God is the Lord, which hath shewed us light: bind the sacrifice with cords, even unto the horns of the altar.

Jesus confirms that he is the stone that the scriptures speak about (read the above psalm) and whosoever falls on it shall be broken.

Luke 13:32And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.³³Nevertheless I must walk to day, and to morrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem.³⁴O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not!³⁵Behold, your house is left unto you desolate: and verily I say unto you, Ye shall not see me, until the time come when ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

Luke 19:38 Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.

Luke 20:17 And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?

Jesus Christ is the stone, the head of the corner-stone…There is no salvation in anyone else.

Acts 4:10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.11 This is the stone (lithos, Strong’s 3037) which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

“Chief corner-stone” in the New Testament is a translation from the Greek word akrogōniaios (Strong’s 204) and this word can be found in Eph. 2:20 and 1 Pet 2:6.

Eph. 2:¹⁸For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.¹⁹Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;²⁰And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;²¹In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:²²In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

Peter urges us to believe in this chief corner-stone from Sion, because there is salvation in no one else. If the corner-stone of the Old Testament is about our Lord God, then the same applies for the New Testament. Jesus Christ is our Lord, God in flesh. Jesus has become the rock of offence to many people who refuse to accept his deity, much like the pharisees who wanted to kill Jesus because “thou, being a man, makest thyself God” (John 10:33)

1 Peter 2:4 To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.6 Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,8 And a stone (lithos, Strong’s 3037) of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.

Again, Peter above is quoting these scriptures:

Isa. 28:16 Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.

All are not teachers, and about submitting to elders and other authorities

We are to be present in the body of Christ – not just spiritually

As the body of Christ we are supposed to come together physically so that we can edify each other in various ways, like praying and prophesying for each other. (If we can of course, and if there is a decent assembly to join.) The Bible tells us that we are different members of the same body, and the body is likened with a human body. All are not an ear, an eye, a knee, etc. If all would be an ear, then something would be utterly wrong with the body of Christ. The Bible tells us for example that all are not teachers, so it’s wise to not let anyone rise up to teach in Church. The greatest risk to end up with false doctrines would be if we let unqualified teachers do the teaching in a teaching situation within a christian assembly.

1 Cor.12:27Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. 28And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. 29Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all TEACHERS? are all workers of miracles?

Rom. 12:⁶Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; ⁷Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that TEACHES, onTEACHING;

We should of course always be prepared to share the word of God and try to make disciples in various ways, but in an assembly we should let the teachers do the main teaching. This doesn’t exempt us from our responsibility to always act like the Bereans and compare all that we hear with scriptures (and test all things), and we must be prepared for that qualified teachers could still be wrong. Peter was an elder who exhorted other elders. Even if all of us are not teachers, we can still contribute in an assembly in many ways. We are encouraged to speak in tongues if there is a translation, make prophesies, share revelations, sing songs, pray for one another, heal someone if we have this gift, etc. But all must be done in order! Just because we are encouraged to share, it doesn’t mean we are allowed to jump off from our seats and burst out in a song or make a comment whenever we feel like it. That would be very annoying both for the teacher and for the listeners.

Some could be better used for teaching than serving tables. But also those who were appointed to serve tables in Acts. 6 must be qualified for it. They would have to be of honest report and full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom:

Acts 6:2Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables. 3Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. 4But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word. 5And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch: 6Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them.

Jesus himself gave some to apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers:

Ephesians 4:10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.) 11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

And for what purpose?

12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

For how long?

13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ

What would be the benefit of not allowing other people to be teachers?

14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine

2 Peter 2:1But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.

With other words there is a risk that we will be caught up with false doctrines if we let unqualified people teach. We should be on our guards! When listening to a teacher we should show him much respect. Most churches that I have attended have allowed people to say “amen” or “hallelujah”, and making brief questions and comments even in the middle of the preaching. Thankfully the comments never got out of hand, but I’ve heard comments which should have been made after the sermon instead of in the middle of it. We must always show respect both to the teacher and to other listeners so we won’t disturb anyone. Who would like to be constantly interrupted when having a little lecture? If there are 50 listeners and half of them have a question, then the teacher would be forced to deal with 25 questions and could easily lose his thread. That could very well lead to chaos and that is exactly what Paul warns us against. He even says:

1 Cor. 14:34Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law. 35And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home:

James tells us to NOT be many masters (teachers, instructors), and when we are sick we are asked to call for the ELDERS so they can pray and put oil on the sick person:

James 3 1My brethren, be not many MASTERS, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.

James 5:14Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders (presbyterous) of the church (ekklesias) ; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:

There are special rules, compared to others, when it comes to accusing an elder for something, and if he is caught in a sin.

1 Tim. 5:19 Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses. 20Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.

Peter seems to focus on exhorting the elders instead of exhorting the entire flock, since it’s the elders of a church who are supposed to be shepherding the flock in the right direction and feed it. The elders are compared with shepherds (so naming an elder “pastor” makes perfect sense) and in a Church we are NOT supposed to take turns to be the shepherd. The elder/shepherd must be qualified and confirmed for this position, and no others should be elders. It would be great if there were more than one elder per church, but if that isn’t achievable then we would have to settle with one. The younger are asked to submit to the elder:

1 Peter 5 :1 The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: 2Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; 3Neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being examples to the flock. 4And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away. 5Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder

We don’t need to be qualified teachers in order to share something from the Bible also within an assembly, but I’m referring to the actual “teaching” here. There are of course loads of examples of churches where the pastor is teaching falsehood, but this only means he should never have been confirmed as an elder in the first place. Thankfully ALL churches don’t work in the wrong way. It’s possible that people with an aim to be “democratic” would like to open up for others to do the teaching, but if we don’t follow Paul’s instructions about elders and teachers, there is a risk for deception and that is why many churches don’t work as they should:

Titus 1:¹⁰For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision: ¹¹Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake.

2 Tim. 4:2Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine. 3For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves TEACHERS, having itching ears; 4And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. 5But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry

Hierarchies?

It’s possible that people are terrified for anything that might smell like hierarchies in Church, and while the NT does not support an assembly where people are of different levels of importance, we can’t get way from the fact that we are different parts of the same body, resulting in that not all are apostles, teachers, elders or shepherds. The shepherd is equal in value compared to the flock, but the shepherd is still supposed to guide the flock and not the other way around. This does not mean we should follow the shepherd blindly. All members of the flock have a free will and a responsibility to follow God (the Bible) more than man.

Below is an example of an issue which could not be settled in the local church but had to go “up” to the apostles and elders in Jerusalem so they could settle the matter. The apostles and the elders had the authority to give instructions, decrees, exhortations and confirmation of churches:

Acts 15:2When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders (presbyterous) about this question. —6And the apostles and elders came togetherfor to consider of this matter.— 22Then pleased it the apostles and elders with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; namely, Judas surnamed Barsabas and Silas, chief men among the brethren:—25It seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,— 30So when they were dismissed, they came to Antioch: and when they had gathered the multitude together, they delivered the epistle:—31Which when they had read, they rejoiced for the consolation. 32And Judas and Silas, being prophets also themselves, exhorted the brethren with many words, and confirmed them.

Paul and Silas delivered decrees for the assemblies to keep, which were ordained by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem. We are not able to read that the assemblies complained about this procedure, as though it would be unfair that some people can decide which rules others should keep. You might call this a “hierarchical system” and therefore something that should be forbidden, but we are to submit to authorities (if they are godly). If we had all obeyed those instructions at all times from the beginning, then the apostles would be able to teach a group of people and confirm them, who could teach another group of people and confirm them, and so on. Clearly we have not always obeyed the instructions concerning elders because today there are some assemblies where the elders have many shortcomings – in traditional churches and particularly in Home churches. Each one should make sure to “lay hands suddenly on no man” (confirming someone to be an elder) as Paul also instructed Timothy:

Acts 16:4And as they went through the cities, they delivered them the decrees for to keep, that were ordained of the apostles and elders which were at Jerusalem. 5And so were the churches established in the faith, and increased in number daily.

1 Timothy 4:14Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the HANDS of the presbytery.

1 Timothy 5:22 Lay HANDS suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men’s sins: keep thyself pure.

Paul gave Timothy instructions to make sure the assembly in Ephesus teach “no other doctrine”. Timothy should also make sure they would not give heed to fables. Hopefully the assembly in question accepted Timothy’s authority and didn’t tell him” Who do you think you are, trying to teach us all those things and exhorting us? Mind your own business because we can take care of ourselves, thank you. We don’t need anyone over us and we don’t believe in a hierarchical system”:

1 Tim 1:2 Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord. 3As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine, 4Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do. 6From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling; 7Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.

Timothy was to reprove, rebuke and exhort, and the reason was the risk for false doctrines which might sneak in:

1 Tim. 4 One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; 5(For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)6Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.

Read the above concerning some of the instructions for an elder. We are told that if his children don’t behave well, it’s doubtful he could keep the flock in the church of God. Being a pastor/elder in a church is likened with being the authoritative Father in a household. In a household a Father doesn’t take turns with his children to be the authority and the Head of the family. He should always be the authority! This of course does not give him the right to run his household in any way he wants, but he should always treat others the way he would like to be treated himself . Neither does it mean that he could not give his children a certain amount of liberty and responsibility. But it’s never the children who decides how much freedom and responsibility to give to their Father, but it’s always the other way around.

The above verse is also yet another verse which confirms that a church gathering is often 1) away from home and 2) in a building and 3) RULED by someone. Here the church of God is CONTRASTED with a home, just like so many other verses. We don’t always take the church with us, but we can GO to a church, and we can even be thrown out of a church by a person who is not even a true believer:

3 John 1: 9I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not. 10Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church.

The Holy Ghost has made some people overseers over a flock, to feed the church of God. Paul knows that after his departure grievous wolves will enter in among “you” (the listeners here were the elders in the church of Ephesus, but this concerns all of us) and that’s why he wants them to take heed.

Acts 20:28Take heed therefore unto YOURSELVES, and to all the FLOCK, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made YOU OVERSEERS, to feed the CHURCH OF God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.29For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in AMONG YOU, not sparing the FLOCK.
